Lecturer Pool - Thai Language - Dept. of South and Southeast Asian Studies



Position overview
Salary range: The UC academic salary scales set the minimum pay at appointment. See the following table(s) for the current salary scale(s) for this position: https://www.ucop.edu/academic-personnel-programs/_files/2024-25/july-2024-scales/t15.pdf. A reasonable estimate for Berkeley SSEAS positions is $68,247 to $83,936; salary is commensurate with teaching experience.

Percent time: Part-time or Full-time: 33% -100%; Summer : 11%

Anticipated start: Appointments start January 1 for spring semester, August 1 for fall semester and July 1 for academic year. Summer appointments begin in late May and run into early August.

Review timeline: Applications are typically reviewed for summer session in March/April, fall in April/May, and spring in October/November. Applicants are considered for positions as needs arise; the existence of this pool does not guarantee that a position is available.

Position duration: Appointments are for one semester, one academic year or one summer sessions section.

Position description

The department of South and Southeast Asian Studies at the University of California, Berkeley, invites application of a pool of qualified temporary non-tenure track lecturer positions to teach courses in introductory, intermediate and advanced Thai.

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to): developing and delivering course content (syllabus, assignments, etc), teaching written and oral Thai communication and expression, holding office hours, assigning grades, preparing course materials, maintaining a course website, compiling teaching materials and interacting with students.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
MA degree (or equivalent international degree) or enrolled in a MA degree (or equivalent international degree) program.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
A minimum one year experience teaching Thai.

Preferred qualifications
MA degree (or equivalent international degree) in teaching Thai as a foreign language, linguistics, second language acquisition, literature or related field. Knowledge of Thai history, society, culture and/or literature. Experience with computer-assisted language learning and language instructional software, and online instruction. Native or near-native fluency in Thai; English fluency; strong communication skills. Demonstrated effectiveness and experience in teaching Thai as a second language and to heritage learners at introductory, intermediate levels and advanced levels, preferably in a college or university setting
