Position overview Position title: Lecturer Salary range: Minimum annual full-time salary rate of $56,945. Salary to be commensurate with experience, with some credit given to prior college-level teaching (not including graduate student or summer session teaching). Percent time: 11 % - 100%. Anticipated start: Positions typically start at the beginning of the semester (in mid-January for Spring Semester; in mid-August for Fall Semester). Position duration: Usually one semester. Appointments may be shorter in duration if only a partial semester is needed by the program. Appointments may be renewable based on the Program's needs, funding, and on lecturer performance. Position description


The Program in Celtic Studies at UC Berkeley welcomes applications for a pool of qualified temporary instructors to teach undergraduate courses, should a need arise, in any of the following possible areas:

  • Celtic Languages (Modern Irish, Medieval and/or Modern Welsh, Breton, Old & Middle Irish)
  • Reading and Composition (in English on the works of Celtic writers)
  • Celtic History/Culture, Including Medieval and/or Modern Mythology, Oral Tradition, Romanticism, Modern Celtic popular cultures, Celtic Christianity, and/or Folklore
  • Celtic Literature (in original languages and in translation) including Irish Literature, Medieval Welsh and Arthurian Literature
  • Celtic Linguistics
  • Other topics in Celtic Studies

    General Duties: In addition to teaching responsibilities, general duties include holding office hours, assigning grades, advising students, preparing course materials (e.g., syllabus), interacting with students outside of class time via email and/or bCourses.

    Qualifications Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

    A completed Bachelor's degree (or equivalent international degree).
    Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

    For those who are not US citizens or permanent residents, a legal permit that allows work in the United States (such as a US visa that allows employment) is required by the start date of the position. The program is usually unable to provide a visa/work permit.
    Preferred qualifications
    • Fluency in the English language.
    • If being hired for a language course, fluency in the language being taught.
    • A completed Master's degree (or equivalent international degree) is strongly preferred, especially for teaching any non-language courses.
    • Demonstrated expertise of literature and culture of the area being taught.
    • Advanced degree(s) may be preferred, depending on course being taught.
    • Experience and demonstrated excellence in teaching at the college level in the U.S.
    • Potential for successful attraction, advising and mentoring students.
    • If hired to teach language course, professional training in language teaching.
    • If hired to teach R&C, demonstrated experience teaching reading and writing in English, and familiarity with UC Berkeley Reading & Composition requirements.
