Overview

The Department of Communication at Northern Illinois University seeks a scholar specializing in Critical Rhetorical Studies of Race to join our faculty as a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor. We are especially interested in someone who specializes in African American Rhetoric, African Diaspora Rhetoric, or any work at the intersection of Black Studies and Rhetorical Studies.

Position Summary

The Assistant Professor in this position will research programs that can lead to tenure and a national reputation as well as demonstrate success in teaching at the undergraduate level and potential for successfully teaching in our M.A. program.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Teaching five 3-credit hour classes per year, undergraduate and graduate courses. 

 

 
  • Teaching classes in rhetorical methods, rhetorical theory, intercultural communication, argumentation, our introductory survey of Communication research, and in their area of expertise. 
 
  • Engaging in appropriate scholarly activities in the field by regularly publishing peer-reviewed research, and engage in service activities appropriate to their rank. 
 
  • Collaborating and contributing to ongoing research projects with the Communication faculty, providing service to the university and the profession
 
  • Working collaboratively with faculty and administrators to meet accreditation requirements and developing university/school partnerships to enhance programs
 
  • Contribute to exam committees and thesis and dissertation committees, as needed
 

Minimum Required Qualifications

Ph.D., J.D., M.F.A. or other appropriate terminal degree in Communication or a related field (degree in hand by start date) ·

  • Demonstrated ability to promote diversity and inclusion in learning and work environments
  • Documented strong record or potential to reach a strong record of peer-reviewed publishing
  • Demonstrated successful collegiate teaching experience
