Lecturer Pool-Department of Comparative Literature
The Department of Comparative Literature at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a pool of part-time, non-tenure track lecturers. Screening of applicants begins immediately and will continue as needed. Applicants will be selected from this pool for one calendar year.
Typically, the Department reviews applications for fall teaching in March and April, and applications for spring teaching in October and November and for the summer in March (if applicable). The number of positions varies from semester to semester, depending upon the needs of the Comparative Literature department. Positions typically start at the beginning of the semester (in mid-January for Spring Semester; in mid-August for Fall Semester), and appointments may be renewable based on the program's need, funding, and on lecturer performance.
We are seeking outstanding lecturers who can teach/co-teach small or medium sized courses in the following areas:
1) Reading and Composition
2) Comparative Literature
3) American Cultures/Comparative Literature (For details on the parameters of American Cultures courses, see http://americancultures.berkeley.edu/
In addition to teaching responsibilities, general duties include holding office hours, assigning grades, advising students, preparing course materials (e.g. syllabus) and maintaining a course website.
Basic qualifications (at time of application):
Must have an advance degree or be enrolled in an advanced degree program at time of application.
Additional qualifications (by start date):
PhD (or equivalent international degree) is required by the start date.
Experience teaching college level in the U.S.
Documented ability to work with texts in more than one language is also required by the start date.
If hired to teach Reading & Composition, demonstrated experience teaching reading and writing in English.
For those who are not US citizens or permanent residents, a legal permit that allows work in the United States (such as a US visa that allows employment) is required by the start date of the position. The department is unable to provide a visa/work permit.

Salary commensurate with education and teaching experience. Starting minimum full-time equivalent annual academic salary is $56,381.00.
