The UM-SJTU Joint Institute (JI) was founded in 2006, following a strategic partner-ship between the University of Michigan (UM) and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU). Both partner universities are committed to developing JI into a world-class institute for engineering education. The Chinese government also recognizes JI as an exemplar of Sino-American collaboration in higher education. In 2014, JI received the prestigious Andrew Heiskell Award for "Innovation in International Education" from the Institute of International Education (IIE). JI currently offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Mechanical Engineering (ME), Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE), and Material Science & Engineering (MSE), all in keeping with UM curriculum objectives. The ME and the ECE programs are ABET accredited. All course instruction is in English.
Technical Communication courses strengthen students’ ability to articulate engineer-ing projects by teaching the basics of written, oral, and visual communication. Topics include but are not limited to technical reports, proposals, presentation skills, scien-tific posters, professional correspondence, and employment communication. Stu-dents should demonstrate an ability to communicate effectively to a wide range of audiences, to organize and present content based on specific audience needs
JI operates on a three-semester schedule. The successful candidate is expected to teach 6 courses a year, 3-4 credits each course. Teaching responsibilities would in-clude various levels of Technical Communication and potentially other related cours-es (e.g., professional development, business, entrepreneurship, etc.).
- Teach Technical Communication courses with the possibility of teaching other courses based on candidate interest and qualification
- Prepare for classes, design homework and supervise examination
- Maintain office hours (2 hours per course per week) to meet with students
- Provide guideline to student teaching assistants on grading and other tasks
- Upload course material and relevant information to course website
- Participate in course review, curriculum development, and other non-teaching services
- Ph.D. holder with evidence of teaching experience in Technical Communica-tion and/or in a related field.
- Understanding of communication training needs in engineering and/or science education. Previous work experience in engineering industry, business sector, or entrepreneurship is a plus.
- Overseas teaching experience is strongly preferred.
- Experience working with speakers of English as a foreign language is a plus.
