Description of Position:
This ESL tenure-track instructional position includes a multiple-course teaching assignment each fall and spring semester that will require the use of discipline expertise, cultural humility, and student-centered practices to be successful (note: summer session opportunities are also available). Teaching assignments will include face-to-face morning, afternoon, and night hours as well as online instruction. This faculty position entails working in collaboration with our existing team of passionate educators on a variety of curriculum, program, and student success efforts.We seek individuals who are themselves bi- or multi- lingual/cultural and share backgrounds and experiences with our students. About the Department
The English as a Second Language Department at Los Medanos College is proud to serve a multilingually and multiculturally diverse population of students from a broad range of backgrounds, including (im)migrants [including internally displaced and possibly returnee migrants], asylum-seekers, refugees, undocumented students, generation 1.5 students, students transferring from our adult schools, international students, and other under-represented and/or underserved student groups. We value this rich and enriching diversity, and we recognize that students come to us with different goals and varying levels of ability, and we strive to create a strengths-based ESL program that is responsive to their needs. In addition to our certificate-based language offerings, we are delighted to have developed and now provide ESL college student orientation, navigation, and engagement classes; enrollment and registration supports; ESL peer tutoring and peer advising; ESL-focused academic counseling; student club and program activities; and outreach tailored to both the College community and the East Contra Costa community it serves.Our expanding program offers intermediate and advanced academic ESL courses that build on our entry/bridge general ESL courses in a unique mirrored credit/noncredit structure. These courses take place across multiple modalities - on-campus, online, and hybrid. In all areas of LMC's ESL program, equity and anti-racism are at the core of our work and inform our pedagogy, extra-curricular support for students, and faculty professional learning and engagement. Duties and Responsibilities:
In addition to contractual duties, all full-time faculty are expected to participate actively in their disciplines, department activities, and the general intellectual life and governance of the college. Part of the teaching assignment may be in the evening and/or online. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
1. advancing equitable student learning through dedicated, exemplary instruction in accordance with established course outlines;
2. participating in the assessment of student learning outcomes for courses and programs; developing and implementing student learning outcomes assessment processes for courses and programs;
3. collaborating in the development and revision of curriculum and in program review;
4. engaging in department program improvement initiatives;
5. participating in department, division, and college committees;
6. participating in professional development activities, both departmental and college-wide;
7. maintaining current knowledge in the subject matter area and effective teaching/ learning strategies;
8. maintaining appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics;
9. informing students of course requirements, evaluation procedures and attendance requirements;
10. preparing and grading class assignments and examinations and informing students of their academic progress;
11. maintaining attendance, scholastic, and personnel records and submitting them according to published deadlines;
12. posting and holding sufficient and regular office hours in accordance with prevailing policy;
13. participating in College's shared governance processes.

Minimum Qualification-Education/Experience:
Understanding of and sensitivity to the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, sexual orientation and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, staff and faculty.

Additional MQ: Master's in TESL, TESOL, applied linguistics with a TESL emphasis, linguistics with a TESL emphasis, English with a TESL emphasis or education with a TESL emphasisORBachelor's in TESL, TESOL, English with a TESL certificate, linguistics with a TESL certificate, applied linguistics with a TESL certificate, or any foreign language with a TESL certificate AND master's in linguistics, applied linguistics, English, composition, bilingual/bicultural studies, reading, speech or any foreign language OR the equivalentIf you do not possess the EXACT minimum qualifications (i.e. you do not possess the exact degree listed) and believe that you meet the minimum qualifications via equivalency, please fill out the equivalency petition form in the document section of the online application. Desirable Qualifications:

    1. Demonstrated success and/or commitment to employing inclusive, culturally responsive, equity-oriented and/or other specific pedagogies to address the unique needs of adult ESL students and populations with diverse backgrounds and experiences
    2. Experience teaching beginning to advanced levels of credit and noncredit integrated ESL classes, preferably in the open-access community college learning environment
    3. Experience and interest in designing and implementing ESL curriculum [including content, learning experiences and outcomes, assessment opportunities, syllabi and materials] that integrate sound second language acquisition methodology and promote career readiness, personal growth, critical thinking, intelligent behaviors, social and civic engagement, and community service
    4. Ability to collaborate with colleagues in the coordination of an ESL program for continual improvement and innovation, particularly an instructional program that includes a broad range of student success supports for multilingual English language learning students
    5. Demonstrated commitment to and interest in ongoing professional learning and engagement, including a) in the field of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), b) with proven and evolving instructional technologies, pedagogies, and assessment practices, and c) through representation and service on college and/or community committees or boards
