The Department of Visual and Material Studies (VMS) in the School of the Museum of Fine Arts (SMFA) at Tufts University is seeking a Full-Time Lecturer (non-tenure stream) specialized in Global Asian Studies (GAS) with a focus on Art and Visual and Material Culture to begin September 1, 2023. Successful candidates will examine the specificity of Asian contexts while understanding them in relation to broader international dynamics. We welcome candidates who show scholarly and pedagogical engagement in both historical and theoretical perspectives that encompass diasporic experiences, trans-Pacific and Global trade networks, and/or decolonizing strategies for Asian art and visual and material culture. We encourage perspectives that draw connections between past global histories and practices with some attention to the way these histories might inform contemporary art across media. Proposed courses might look at how images, objects, environments, and people shape collective identities and cultural diversity within Asia and beyond. These priorities reflect our departmental and institutional commitment to augment, nurture, articulate, and voice diverse, equitable, and inclusive narratives.

Applicants with proven teaching experience and a strong commitment to teaching excellence are ideal candidates for the position. A promising record of research and scholarship that informs pedagogy and advising is preferred. We are especially interested in colleagues who desire to teach in an art school setting interacting with both studio courses and academic subjects with rigor and fluidity.

Responsibilities include teaching to BFA and MFA students as well as undergraduate and graduate students in the liberal arts and sciences, advising and mentoring students, and fulfilling service responsibilities within the department, school, and university. The candidate should expect to contribute to departmental programs and interdepartmental collaborations within Tufts.

The Department values diversity among its faculty, is committed to building a culturally diverse intellectual community, and strongly welcomes applications from women and minorities.

Tufts is committed to supporting the work-life balance of its faculty, and is striving to become an anti-racist institution.

Qualifications

Ph.D. degree or ABD in Asian Studies; Visual or Material Culture Studies; Art and Architectural History; or other related disciplines is required. Three years of teaching experience is preferred.
