The Department of English, Humanities and Communication in the College of Arts & Sciences (COAS) at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University-Worldwide announces an exciting new strategic initiative to develop a Virtual Center for Excellence in Communication Studies. ERAU actively seeks to improve student communication skills and provide students with a space to practice those skills. These opportunities are especially vital to ERAU’s increasing population of international and first-time-in-college students. A set of resources designed to meet student needs both in and out of the classroom will transform students into future industry leaders representing the world-class education provided by Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Finally, communication studies-including but not limited to writing, literacy, media, global communications, and cultural studies-is an important and growing area for interdisciplinary research. The proposed Virtual Center for Excellence in Communication Studies will provide a fertile environment for faculty collaborations and excellence in scholarship. In support of this Center, the Department of English, Humanities and Communication is inviting applications and nominations for two new faculty positions, including this call for an Instructor in Communication Studies.

COAS and the Department of English, Humanities and Communication seek highly qualified applicants to apply for a non-tenure-track, full-time Instructor position in the Department of English, Humanities and Communications as part of the Virtual Center for Excellence in Communication Studies. This is primarily a teaching position that will serve the needs of the department, specifically the development of a series of course options for students who are English Language Learners (ELL). Other duties include mentoring and evaluating adjunct faculty as well as curriculum development. However, the position also will be part of a large group of strategic Instructor hires across the three Worldwide colleges, with the goals of a) reducing dependence on adjunct faculty for high impact courses, and b) supporting student academic mentoring. These new faculty members will have a reduced teaching load for the purpose of:

conducting student academic mentoring
participating in a core faculty group at one of six physical locations nationally (Atlanta, Dallas, Los Angeles, Miami, San Diego, Seattle) that generate large student populations; the core faculty groups will create a vibrant Center of Learning at each of these locations
hosting student activities and alumni events
creating hybrid courses that incorporate intensive face-to-face sessions at each Center of Learning.
The ultimate goal for these strategic hires is to provide a more personalized experience for students that will lead to an increase in student affinity with the colleges and Embry-Riddle while improving rates of persistence to degree completion. Some travel may be required for student recruitment and retention.

COAS offers four bachelor’s degrees (Communication, Homeland Security, Interdisciplinary Studies, and Emergency Services) and two master’s degrees (Cybersecurity Management & Policy and Human Security & Resilience), with more planned for the near future. Departments in the College are: Security and Emergency Services; English, Humanities and Communications; Mathematics, Physical and Life Sciences; and, Social Sciences and Economics. In addition to degree programs, COAS provides over 2,000 sections of general education courses as part of every degree program at Embry-Riddle Worldwide, with a focus on developing students’ critical thinking, quantitative reasoning, information literacy, communication, scientific literacy, cultural literacy, and lifelong personal growth skills. The Worldwide campus has an enrollment of 23,000 full-time equivalent students, delivering courses globally online via Canvas, synchronously via EagleVision to both homes and classrooms, face-to-face at over 130 locations, and in a blended format. Embry-Riddle Worldwide earned the #1 ranking in 2017 for Best Online Bachelor’s programs from U.S. News & World Report.
