The University of California, Davis invites applications for a tenured position in African American Studies at the level of Associate or Full Professor, to begin July 1, 2018. The successful candidate will be expected to assume responsibilities as Chair of the Department beginning one year after appointment. Disciplinary field and specialization are open, but interdisciplinary work within the social sciences or humanities is preferred. The successful candidate should complement the strengths and goals of the Department of African American and African Studies at UC Davis. In order to be considered at the Associate or Full Professor rank, an applicant’s record of scholarship must meet the standards for tenure at the University of California. Applicants must hold the Ph.D. or equivalent degree in a relevant field.

We seek a scholar with an accomplished and innovative publication profile, an excellent record of teaching, intellectual distinction, and interdisciplinary expertise in the field of African American Studies. The successful candidate should possess a strong track record of departmental/university service and collaboration, proven administrative abilities, and successful extramural funding. We are especially interested in candidates who will provide programmatic leadership in the delivery of our undergraduate and graduate curricula, who will foster outreach and grant-writing activities to support programmatic goals, and who are committed to building and sustaining cross-disciplinary, cross-departmental connections to other programs on the campus. Candidates should be prepared to teach undergraduate courses with cultural, political, social, and economic dimensions of the contemporary African American experience.

Our program is multidisciplinary, with strengths in the humanities, cultural studies, and social sciences. We offer an undergraduate major and minor program as well as a graduate Designated Emphasis with the Cultural Studies Program. Faculty members are also encouraged to seek affiliation with a number of graduate groups within the University.

Interested candidates should send a letter of application that includes a statement of research interests, a curriculum vitae, the names and contact information for 4 references, two recent course evaluations and a writing sample (20-30 pp.) from recent research already published or under contract for publication, and a Statement of Contributions to Diversity to the online application system at https://recruit.ucdavis.edu/apply/JPF01784

For full consideration applications should be completed by October 2, 2017. The position is open until filled.
