Expertise: Kats' research interest is on the political, social and cultural history of Russia in the 20th century with a focus on the intelligentsia and education. He explores how the Russian state involves the intelligentsia in its own project of socialization, politicization, propaganda, and literacy. Centering on the study of teachers, Kats analyzes the broader process of the creation of a Russian intelligentsia.
