His research and teaching interests include modern and contemporary poetry and poetics; issues in postmodernism; theories and practice of the avant-garde; twentieth-century experimental fiction; nineteenth-century American literature, especially Ralph Waldo Emerson and pragmatism, and its impact on twentieth-century writing; literature and culture of the Cold War; African-American poetry and fiction; theories and debates about everyday life and twentieth-century writing.
