The English department is ranked among the top 30 in the world and offers a major and a minor in English as well as MA and PhD research degrees, a second major in Theatre and Drama, and a minor in Creative Writing. Our dedicated and experienced faculty possess a wide range of research and teaching interests including a concentration in modern and contemporary literature. Our department encourages innovative thought, open expression, and lively debate, promoting a wide range of approaches to literary study in the spirit of intellectual discovery.

We offer a dynamic environment for innovation and creative exploration in Theatre and Drama studies, enhanced by our state-of-the-art black box theatre for experimental and performance-based work, as well as opportunities for collaboration with visiting artists and theatre companies. Our innovative second major in Theatre and Drama equips students with a comprehensive understanding of theatre history, theory, and practice while fostering critical and creative engagement with dramatic literature and performance.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and sustain a robust research agenda in theatre and drama that produces high-quality publications, creative outputs, and innovative scholarship.
• Design and deliver engaging undergraduate and postgraduate courses that integrate theory, practice, and critical analysis within both English and performance studies.
• Actively pursue and secure research funding through competitive grants and industry partnerships.
• Mentor and supervise student research projects, creative works, and academic inquiries, fostering an environment of critical thinking and artistic experimentation.
• Contribute to the continuous development of the curriculum by ensuring course offerings remain current and reflective of emerging trends in theatre and drama.
• Participate in academic service through departmental, school, and university committees, and engage in outreach activities that strengthen NTU’s academic and cultural networks.

Requirements

  • A PhD in English, Theatre, or Drama or a closely related field
  • A strong record of research or clear potential for pioneering work in theatre and drama studies.
  • A demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Prior teaching experience is preferred, with evidence of effective pedagogy and student mentorship.
  • An ability to contribute to interdisciplinary initiatives and collaborate effectively with peers across NTU’s School of Humanities.
