Summary

The Department of Humanities and Communication at Trine University invites applications for a full-time assistant/associate professor of communication to teach a range of courses and advise undergraduate students beginning Fall 2024. The ideal candidate will be interested in sports media and have relevant teaching experience and expertise in one or more of the following areas: sports media/communication; video and audio production; broadcasting; public speaking. Professional experience in a relevant field (sports reporting, broadcasting, journalism, etc.) is also desirable.

Responsibilities of the ideal candidate will include:

  • Teaching a variety of introductory and advanced Communication courses in which students develop nuanced and practical skills in planning, producing, and distributing public-facing content in written, audio, and video formats.
  • Working closely with students to structure independent and group projects; recent examples of student projects include filming a documentary, composing a local professional networking guide, and producing a large community literary event.
  • Assisting in the department’s collaboration with the Trine Broadcasting Network, which produces high-quality multimedia coverage of Trine University events and athletics.

The Department of Humanities and Communication fosters a culture of collaboration and creativity, and communication students and faculty work closely with the English program, as well as a variety of departments across campus.

Trine University is a private, teaching-focused institution. Faculty expectations are split into 80% teaching, 10% scholarship/professional development, and 10% service. A standard teaching load for faculty is 12 credit hours per semester. Service to the department and the university is highly valued. Although Trine does not offer tenure, faculty retention is outstanding and is an institutional priority. 

Education and/or Experience

Required: An MA in Communication alongside higher education teaching experience is required, PhD or terminal degree preferred.

Preferred: The ideal candidate will be fluent in the language of sports and have professional experience in broadcast journalism as well as skills in audio/video production and multi-media storytelling. In addition to teaching courses in the communication program and advising communication majors, this person will be responsible for building partnerships both with the Trine Broadcasting Network (an outreach of University Marketing and Communication) and local media outlets.
