The Department of Environment and Sustainability at the University at Buffalo is seeking a humanities-trained scholar to contribute substantively in addressing critically important environmental problems facing society. This scholar would partner with a sustainability scientist actively seeking solutions to real-world environmental issues, and contribute to this research from a complementary and informed humanities-based perspective. These environmental problems could include the following on-going research endeavors:
Community resilience to climate change, including coastal communities
Urban heat island effects and mitigating the impacts of extreme heat on vulnerable populations
Critical infrastructure resilience to extreme events
Climate change and health equity and/or environmental justice
The ideal candidate would be a PhD recipient in the Humanities interested in crossing-over into a STEM-based discipline to offer innovative solutions, to pursue creative activities, and/or to provide transdisciplinary insights to address these environmental issues.
The position also carries meaningful opportunities for professional development. These include grant writing, participating in environmental and sustainability seminars and workshops, guidance in publishing research papers, presenting research findings at conferences, and graduate student supervision. Initial appointment will be for one year with potential renewal for up to two additional years.
