Position Overview

The Department of African & African-American Studies (AAAS), in collaboration with the Kansas African Studies Center (KASC) at the University of Kansas (KU), seeks a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of African Digital Humanities to build upon the Department and Center’s 1) existing research output in digital humanities and African Studies, 2) commitment toward quality undergraduate and graduate teaching and training in African Studies, and 3) contribution toward community engagements that promote global citizenship. The successful candidate will work alongside the Institute for Digital Research in the Humanities at the University of Kansas to develop innovative and collaborative projects with Institute staff and affiliated faculty. The candidate’s digital humanities activities will include a primary focus on Africa and its diaspora by training students in digital research methods, creating public humanities projects with students, faculty, and community members, and working with other initiatives to enrich African Studies and the humanities at the University of Kansas. The candidate’s home department will be African & African-American Studies but close collaboration with the Kansas African Studies Center and participation in Center activities is expected. KASC is a Title VI National Resource Center for African Studies with over 30 core faculty members and an additional 70 affiliated faculty and staff across the Lawrence campus. The successful candidate will become an affiliate of the Institute for Digital Research in the Humanities (IDRH) and will join a growing digital humanities research community at the University of Kansas with strengths in a variety of digital humanities practices and methods. IDRH, founded in 2010, is supported through a partnership between KU Libraries, the Hall Center for the Humanities, and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. IDRH’s dynamic programming includes an annual Digital Humanities (DH) Forum, a speaker series, hands-on workshops, and internal funding competitions. The candidate will be expected to be an active participant in the intellectual life of IDRH and the digital humanities community at KU, and to serve as a bridge between the DH community and the AAAS community, helping students to gain skills to better integrate digital scholarship into their research and teaching.

Within the digital humanities, areas of potential specialization could include digital cultures and media; digital identities and representation; data literacy and ethics; digital diasporas and digital citizenships; computational analysis and machine learning; network analysis; GIS; data visualization; analysis of large data sets; text-analytic techniques; 3D modeling; creative coding/programming; linked data and the semantic web; physical computing and/or other emerging technologies. The candidate should demonstrate innovative thinking and a proactive approach to the questions that digital humanities methods, approaches, tools, and theories raise in their academic disciplines.

Job Description

The University of Kansas is a Carnegie doctoral/research-extensive university with a $1.4 billion endowment and a faculty of 2,600. Current enrollment is 28,500 (19,000 undergraduate), with students drawn from 110 nations and all 50 states; 20.6% of KU students are members of minority groups. Duties and Responsibilities:

Research (40%):

The successful candidate will conduct research in African digital humanities and other areas of expertise that complement current strengths in the department. All faculty members are expected to develop and maintain an active and productive research program beyond the level of the Ph.D. thesis.

Teaching (40%):
The successful candidate is expected to : 1) Teach 4 courses to undergraduate and graduate students per academic year in the African & African-American Studies department; courses may be cross-listed or cross-referenced with other departments. 2). Develop curricular programs (e.g. courses) in African digital humanities and related fields; 3) Advise undergraduate and graduate students.

Service (20%):
All faculty members are expected to participate in appropriate professional and departmental activities, such as attending program meetings, carrying out program committee assignments, attending national meetings or conferences, and refereeing or reviewing manuscripts for research journals and grant proposals. Service to the College and University is also expected, and to the greater profession at-large.

Required Qualifications

Evaluation of the following requirements will be made through descriptions of work experience and educational experiences in a letter of application, record of accomplishments and productivity addressed in a CV, and information provided from professional references.
Ph.D. in a humanities field, African Studies, or related discipline by the start date of the appointment.
Demonstrated experience in the integration of digital humanities tools and methods in scholarship and undergraduate teaching.
Demonstrated experience in the technologies and methods of one or more key Digital Humanities areas (e.g. visualization, text mining, text encoding, spatial analysis, network analysis, database design, dynamic digital editions, and other areas).
Demonstrated research interests and commitment to the Digital Humanities broadly conceived, as evidenced through graduate coursework, dissertation research, digital projects, publications, and/or externally funded research grants.
Demonstrated ability to teach effectively in African Studies, the humanities, or similar programs
