The Department of World Languages, Literatures & Cultures of Auburn University invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor in German for a one-year appointment, starting fall semester 2024.

This is a full-time nine-month, non-tenure eligible position. Teaching load is 3/3 per academic year of mostly elementary- and intermediate-level German. If the need exists, the candidate may be asked to teach in their area of specialization.

Auburn residents enjoy a thriving community, recognized as one of the “best small towns in America,” with moderate climate and easy access to major cities or to beach and mountain recreational facilities. Situated along the rapidly developing I-85 corridor between Atlanta, Georgia, and Montgomery, Alabama, the combined Auburn-Opelika-Columbus statistical area has a population of over 500,000, with excellent public school systems and regional medical centers.

Minimum qualifications include PhD in German, German Linguistics, or German as a Foreign Language by the date that employment begins; native or near-native fluency in German and English; college-level teaching experience; positive teaching evaluations; and familiarity with current language pedagogy and the ACTFL Guidelines. Candidates must be willing to participate in extra-curricular activities (such as Stammtisch, German Film Series, German Club, German Honor Society) to help promote enrollment and participation in the German Studies program and concurrent degree program with engineering.

The candidate selected for this position must meet eligibility requirements to work in the United States at the time the appointment is scheduled to begin, and to continue working legally for the proposed term of employment. The candidate must be able to communicate fluently in German and English.

Teaching experience at the college level in the US, positive teaching evaluations, and familiarity with current language pedagogy.

Applicants will be required to submit a letter of application, curriculum vitae, graduate transcripts (unofficial transcripts are acceptable), sample teaching evaluations, sample syllabi, a one-page statement of teaching philosophy, and contact information for three letters of recommendation (at least one of whom can address candidate’s teaching effectiveness).
