    Position overview
    Salary range: The posted UC academic salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and/or step at appointment. See the following table for the salary scale for this position https://www.ucop.edu/academic-personnel-programs/_files/2023-24/july-2023-acad-salary-scales/t15.pdf. A reasonable estimate for this position is $66,259 - $76,814.

    Percent time: Positions range from 33% to 100% each semester. Summer positions are 11%.

    Anticipated start: Positions typically start at the beginning of the semester (in mid-January for Spring Semester; in mid-August for Fall Semester). Summer appointments begin in late May and run into early August.

    Review timeline: Typically, appointments for summer and Fall semester are reviewed in February/March, and appointments for Spring semester in October/November. Applicants are considered for positions as needs arise; the existence of this pool does not guarantee that a position is available.

    Position duration: Appointments are made on a semester-by-semester basis. Appointments may be renewable based on the department's need, funding, and performance.

    Position description

    The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at UC Berkeley seeks applications for a pool of qualified lecturers to teach Portuguese courses in any of the possible areas:

  • Literature and culture courses on topics related to any area of the Lusophone world, upper-division, taught in Portuguese
  • Literature and culture courses on topics related to any area of the Lusophone world, lower- or upper-division, taught in English
  • Portuguese language courses

    In addition to instruction, general duties include holding office hours, developing syllabi and assignments, writing and grading exams, and grading and commenting on papers. Other duties may be assigned by the Chair as necessary.

    Qualifications
    Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
    Must have an advanced degree.

    Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
    For those who are not US citizens or permanent residents, a legal permit that allows work in the United States (such as a US visa that allows employment) is required by start date of the position. The Department is unable to provide a visa/work permit.

    Preferred qualifications
  • Native or near-native fluency in Portuguese and English.
  • College level teaching experience in the U.S.
  • For literature/culture instruction (upper division courses): Doctoral degree (or equivalent).
  • For literature/culture instruction (lower/upper division courses): Demonstrated expertise and relevant teaching experience in Lusophone literature and culture, with possible emphasis on cultural production from Brazil, Portugal or Luso-Africa, including literature and cinema.
  • For language instruction: Demonstrated excellence in teaching, familiarity with college-level language programs, and relevant teaching experience using current language-teaching methodologies.
