Faculty Position in Arab World Literary Studies

    Department: NUQ Liberal Arts Program

Northwestern University in Qatar invites applications for a full-time open rank faculty appointment in Literary Studies with a focus on literature from communities in the Arab world, to be appointed in the Liberal Arts Program. Candidates should demonstrate a research profile that engages with literature from the Arab world. This could include classical Arabic literature, regional minority literatures, or Arab literature in translation. A familiarity with literature from the Gulf region would be a plus. Linguistic proficiency in Arabic for research purposes is required. A research profile of active and high-quality scholarship, or demonstrated potential for excellence in research, is essential. Successful candidates should possess a willingness to engage across disciplinary boundaries in research and teaching. Candidates are expected to contribute to both undergraduate education and Liberal Arts program development. Candidates should possess a PhD in a field related to the position prior to the position start date of August 1, 2025.

In addition to a demonstrated research track record commensurate with rank, or highly promising research trajectory for emerging candidates, applicants should show competence in working with globally diverse communities, a strong commitment to excellence in inclusive teaching and mentoring, and dedication to institutional service and shared governance. Teaching expections include two courses per semester, to include one or two first year writing seminars per year, core disciplinary courses, elective courses that speak to their research field, as well as contributing to NU-Q’s curricular demands. This latter could include the required “Ways of Knowing” course, the Doha Seminar honors course, or courses qualifying for our university’s growing number of interdisciplinary minors, such as Middle East Studies, Media and Politics, and Africana Studies. There are also opportunities to collaborate with NU-Q’s Institute for Advanced Study of the Global South, Artificial Intelligence and Media Lab, and Media Majlis.

NU-Q is a globally embedded institution: it is one of three campuses of Northwestern University (Chicago, Doha, Evanston) and one of several institutions in the Qatar Foundation’s Education City in Doha, Qatar. Our mission is to mentor and educate students to become creative, ethical, and impactful communicators across cultural and national boundaries. We are committed to a vibrant student life, academic excellence, and high-level undergraduate student research and media making, particularly on the Global South. Located at the confluence of continents, NU-Q is a diverse global community with approximately 500 students from 60 countries.

NU-Q provides competitive compensation and benefits. The medium of instruction is English, but proficiency in Arabic or another regional language is an advantage at NU-Q. Candidates with experience in US higher education as well as in the Arab region; women; and persons from traditionally underrepresented groups in academia are particularly encouraged to apply.
