The current base salary range for this position is $ $74,100 - $111,400. "Off-scale" salaries, which yield compensation that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.

    Position description

    The Department of Linguistics at Berkeley supports a broad view of language and diverse approaches to its analysis. Faculty and students investigate many different areas of language structure and use, engaging with linguistic theories through methods that include computational modeling, corpus linguistics, experimental procedures, fieldwork, and formal analysis.

    An Assistant/Associate Project Scientist position is available in the Berkeley Speech and Computation Lab to work with Dr. Gaper Begu on a project to build all-purpose tools for decoding the communication system of sperm whales. The lab focuses on creating realistic models of human language learning using deep neural networks. The project, funded by CETI, will entail creating deep neural network models and transferring them to whale communication data with the purpose of better understanding how whales communicate. The candidate will also be expected to perform acoustic and statistical analysis of whale audio and visual data.

    Position Duties:
    Building, analyzing, developing, evaluating, comparing, and improving deep learning models
    Analyzing acoustic data, conducting signal processing and inferential statistic methods on audio data
    Managing, curating, and analyzing multimodal data (visual, audio)

    Qualifications
    Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
    Possesses a PhD degree or equivalent international degree

    Preferred qualifications
    PhD in linguistics, cognitive science, psychology, CS, marine biology, or related field
    Experience with acoustics and signal processing, information theory, deep learning, machine learning, and inferential statistics
    Experience with machine learning tools and packages (TensorFlow, PyTorch) and programming languages Python, R
    Strong analytical and team work skills
