Lecturer Pool - Department of English - College of Letters & Science

Position overview Position title: Lecturer
Salary range: Salary is commensurate with teaching experience. The starting minimum full-time equivalent salary is $64,329, in accordance with the current Unit 18 Lecturer salary scale and its provisions.

Percent time: Appointments are non-tenure, renewable upon assessment of satisfactory performance, are typically part-time, and can range from 33 percent to 100 percent, depending on the number of courses taught. Please note: The use of a lecturer pool does not guarantee that an open position exists.

Anticipated start: August 1, 2022 (Fall 2022), January 1, 2023 (Spring 2023), or Summer 2023 (depends on session). Typically, the Department reviews applications for fall teaching in May or early June, applications for spring teaching in November and for the summer in March (if applicable).

Position duration: Fall or Spring: 5 months; Summer: depends on session.

Position description

The Department of English at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a pool of outstanding temporary instructors to teach Reading and Composition courses, lower and upper division courses, and/or sections of lower and upper division courses, should openings arise.

Responsibilities may include (but are not limited to): Teaching one or more sections of a lecture course (or courses) and attend all lectures, advising students and holding regular office hours, assigning grades, preparing course materials (e.g., syllabus), and maintaining a course website. Generally, independent courses meet for a total of 3 hours per week; each section of lecture courses meets for a total of 1 hour per week (lecture attendance adds 2 hours).

For those who are not US citizens or permanent residents, a legal permit that allows work in the United States (such as a US visa that allows employment) is required by the start date of the position. The department is unable to provide a visa/work permit.

We may contact you in the second stage of review to request documentation verifying experience teaching at the college level (if relevant); sample course descriptions and syllabi; and proof of degree.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
PhD (or equivalent international degree), or enrolled in PhD or equivalent international degree-granting program at the time of application.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
PhD (or equivalent international degree).
College-level teaching experience by time of appointment.

Preferred qualifications
PhD (or equivalent international degree) in English Literature or a related field.
