Position Overview
The Department of Classics at the University of Kansas invites applications for an appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure track) or Associate Professor (tenured) with specialty in Ancient Greek. We seek a scholar of Ancient Greek language and literature whose research focuses on the complex identities that literature both shapes and reveals, and whose expertise complements the range of interests covered by current faculty. The University of Kansas is in the city of Lawrence, a thriving community 40 minutes from the Kansas City metropolitan area and 30 minutes from the state capital, Topeka. The Classics Department maintains an excellent undergraduate program and one of the top MA programs in the country. Job Description
Research (40%): Establish and maintain an active and productive program of research within area of specialization.
Teaching/Advising (40%): Teach two courses per semester including introductory through MA-level courses in Ancient Greek and courses in ancient literature and culture in translation. Teaching duties include developing syllabi; preparing and teaching lectures; creating, administering, and grading homework assignments and exams; holding regular office hours; and supervising Graduate Teaching Assistants when appropriate. Advising duties may include mentoring graduate students in the Classics Department and serving on undergraduate and graduate thesis and exam committees, as appropriate.
Service (20%): Service to the Department, the College, the University, and the profession of Classics exists in many forms from sitting on committees to directing programs and outreach.
Required Qualifications
Evaluation of the following requirements will be made through (1) descriptions of educational and professional experiences in letter of application, (2) record of accomplishments and productivity addressed in CV, (3) writing sample, and (4) information provided from professional references:
- Ph.D. in Classics or closely related field (expected by the start date of the appointment), with a specialty in Greek literature and culture that would complement existing departmental specialties;
- Ability to teach ancient Greek courses effectively at all levels;
- Potential for high quality teaching in an array of courses across the department’s curriculum in addition to Greek language;
- Potential to establish an independent programmatic line of research that includes publications and external funding;
For appointment at the rank of Associate Professor with tenure, in addition to the above, the candidate must meet Department and University criteria for a tenured Associate Professor. For information see:
