The Center for Educational Partnerships at UC Berkeley seeks qualified temporary non-tenure track, part-time Instructors and Co-Instructors (TSPs) for Summer 2020 to teach summer courses to high school students in the following core classes: Mathematics (Algebra I & II, Geometry, Calculus); Humanities (e.g., Writing, Research, Critical Theory), Sciences (Physical, Biological and Earth Sciences) and elective courses: Data Science and Photo Journalism. The period of employment is May 30 through July 20, 2020. Actual instruction takes place from June 15, 2020 - July 17, 2020. Instructors for the Pre-College TRIO Upward Bound and Upward Bound Math & Science Program will create and implement engaging and academically rigorous five-week courses for low-income, first-generation-to-college high school students. Class sizes are small (15-20 students) and are taught on the UC Berkeley campus.

The Upward Bound and Upward Bound Math-Science Program are federally funded educational outreach programs serving high school students who are low-income and first-generation-to-college (LIFG). The academic component of the summer programs focuses on social justice, college preparation, and project-based learning. Our motto this year is, "When you educate one person you can change a life, when you educate many you can change the world." (Shai Reshef) We feel this quote captures our pedagogical aim to empower our students to become social change agents. Not only are they responsible for seeking an education but they are capable of educating others.

The UB/UBMS Summer Residential Program provides a select group of nearly 100 students from California, Hawaii and Nevada the opportunity to live in student residence halls and take classes on the UC Berkeley Campus. Students also engage in exciting enrichment activities, academic and college-preparation workshops, and academic field trips. Instruction will take place Monday - Thursday during the day or the evening, contingent upon classroom availability on the UC Berkeley campus.

Teaching Responsibilities

We are seeking outstanding instructors (TSPs) who can teach high school courses for the Upward Bound and Upward Bound Math & Science Summer Program, grades 10-12.

General Duties
Instructors are responsible for all instruction and setting up a safe learning environment in which students can learn the material and engage in critical thinking and analysis. In addition to teaching responsibilities, duties include: designing the course and creating all course materials (including but not limited to a course syllabus, course calendar, assignments, and project design); reviewing student diagnostic tests and applying results to the organization of the course curriculum; attending weekly staff/instructor meetings; submitting comprehensive progress and final student evaluations, final grades and program evaluation; and supervising the work of a teaching assistant (including providing appropriate support). Instructors are also required to attend a training session on May 30, 2020, a welcome conference on June 13, 2020, colloquium on July 17, 2020 and a debriefing session on July 20, 2020.

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent international degree)

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with high school students
  • Teaching credential, or at least 2 years teaching experience
  • Experience and/or understanding of Project-Based Learning
  • Experience with curriculum development
  • Ability to teach courses in an intensive, fast-paced schedule
  • Cross-cultural awareness and understanding of issues faced by low-income, first-generation students
  • Passion for teaching underrepresented students

Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a criminal background check. This position is Mandated Reporter under California law, and the successful candidates will be required to complete the UC course for Mandated Reporters.

Core class instructors with a 6-week appointment of approximately 15-18 hours/week will receive a salary range of $3,600- 4,800 depending on experience and number of courses.

Elective course instructors with a 6-week appointment of approximately 6-8 hours/week will receive a salary of $2000.
