Position Overview

The William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of Kansas is seeking exceptional candidates for two full-time, non-tenured Professor of the Practice at the rank of Assistant or Associate in strategic communications (i.e., PR, advertising, and/or digital marketing). The position will be an academic year (9-month) appointment to begin either January 1 or August 18, 2022.

Successful applicants will have at least a master’s degree in strategic communication, mass communications, journalism or a closely related field. Candidates also should have the ability to work in an interdisciplinary, diverse and collaborative environment. Professional and teaching experience in strategic communication, mass communications or journalism is required. Experiences working with diverse audiences on national and international campaigns will be an advantage, as will be university teaching experience (online and in-person) and/or workshop development.

We seek individuals qualified to teach courses including but not limited to: media planning and buying, advertising, public relations, digital marketing, data analytics, entrepreneurial and emerging media, social media development and monitoring, strategic campaigns management, applied research, marketing, crisis communications, and/or capstone courses. This position may require travel among the KU campuses located in Lawrence and Kansas City.

The KU School of Journalism and Mass Communications employs more than 25 full-time faculty members and offers two concentrations of studies: multimedia journalism and strategic communications-at the undergraduate level. It has research-oriented Master’s and Ph.D. programs, a Master’s program in Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC) on its Kansas City (Edwards) campus, and an online Master’s program in Digital Content Strategy. It is one of nine independent professional schools in a Research One university. We offer the opportunity to work with award-winning students and nationally recognized faculty in a collegial, collaborative and energetic environment.

Founded in 1865, KU is a Research One University, and one of only 34 public members of the prestigious Association of American Universities (AAU). The University enrolls more than 27,000 students and the School has a student population of about 900. The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the U.S. by the effective date of the appointment.

Job Description

Teaching and/or research/creative work: 80%
Teach courses in the graduate and undergraduate programs
Participate in career advising for graduate and undergraduate students
Develop marketing and communication workshops for professional audiences
Contribute to a culture of research and creative activities
Service: 20%
Participate in the regular academic activities of the School and Edwards campus, including committee assignments and School functions
Assist in developing IMC program marketing and recruitment
Professional service in academic and/or media organizations
Percentage of effort allocation can be negotiated based on other potential duties in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications.

Required Qualifications

Required qualifications for the rank of Assistant Professor of the Practice
Master’s or terminal degree in mass communication, journalism or a closely related field
Experience in developing and assessing marketing strategies
At least five years of full-time professional experience in strategic communications, journalism, marketing, business development, mass communications, or related fields
Required qualifications for the rank of Associate Professor of the Practice
Master’s or terminal degree in mass communication, journalism or a closely related field
Experience in developing and assessing marketing strategies
10 years of full-time professional experience in strategic communications, journalism, marketing, business development, mass communications, or related fields
Other variables such as experience level, management roles, diversity of projects/clients will be taken into consideration for rank appointment.

Preferred Qualifications

Evidence of working in and contributing to an environment committed to the diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging initiatives of the School and the University’s strategic plan Jayhawks Rising.
Experience teaching at the university level
Evidence of working with social media data, including primary data collection and analysis
Ability to develop and teach, courses, certificate programs and workshops (online or in-person)
Experience in the development and implementation of web and mobile applications
