Lecturer - American Studies Program - College of Letters & Science
The American Studies Program at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a pool of qualified temporary instructors to teach courses in American Studies should an opening arise during the academic year or summer session. Screening of applicants is ongoing and will continue as needed. The number of positions varies from semester to semester, depending on the needs of the department. Positions may range from 33% to 100% during the academic year, while summer appointments start at 8.5%.
Applicants should be prepared to teach courses in the following areas:
- The prerequisite Introduction to American Studies (Everyday Objects, Disney as American Culture, American Consumer Culture);
- The upper-division senior thesis seminar, in which instructors advise students on how to design and execute a substantial integrative research project drawn from their preparatory work in American Studies;
- Courses in the American Studies core methods/theory series, Examining U.S. Cultures in Time (The 1950s, Interwar American Culture, Postwar American Advertising, Progressive Era)
- Courses in the American Studies core methods/theory series, Examining U.S. Cultures in Place (The American Southwest, American Cultural Landscapes, Suburbs in the Twentieth Century, U.S. Railways, Hollywood)

Teaching an American Studies course includes holding office hours, assigning grades, advising students, preparing course materials, and maintaining a course website.
Due to COVID 19, UC Berkeley began the academic year with fully remote instruction. Depending on public health conditions, the need for remote education and virtual classrooms may continue. Instructors must have internet access and be prepared to adjust pedagogical approaches to develop asynchronous instructional materials, foster student-to-student interaction, and reimagine assignments and exams for a remote format.
Basic qualifications (at time of application): must be enrolled in a Ph.D. degree program or an equivalent international program at the time of application.
Additional qualifications (by start date): completion of a Ph.D. or an equivalent international degree. Candidates must already be authorized to work in the United States.
Preferred qualifications: Ph.D. and college teaching experience in American Studies, African American Studies, Art History, English, Ethnic Studies, Gender and Women's Studies, Geography, and/or History; ability to contribute to diversity and equal opportunity in higher education. Experience working with college students on intensive, individualized research, and writing projects.
Salary is commensurate with experience.
UC lecturers are academic appointees and are represented by an exclusive bargaining agent, University Council - American Federation of Teachers (UC-AFT). This position is covered by the collective bargaining agreement of the UC-AFT.

Applications are typically considered in April and May for fall course needs, in September and October for spring course needs, and February and March for summer course needs. The pool will close January 31, 2022; applicants wishing to remain in the pool after that time will need to submit a new application.
