Faculty Position in Journalistic Writing and Reporting

Department: NUQ Journalism Program

Northwestern University in Qatar invites applications for a full-time, open-rank faculty appointment in Journalistic Writing and Reporting, to be appointed in the Journalism and Strategic Communication Program. The position start-date is August 1, 2025. We seek candidates with demonstrated experience in the production of professional journalism content across platforms and university-level journalism education. Teaching expections include two courses per semester, focusing primarily on basic to advanced journalism skills courses required for NU-Q journalism majors. Candidates should have honed storycraft experience and exceptional line-editing skills for text-based assignments, and they should be able to impart skills of story concept, pitching, and story progression as they support students in developing reporting skills and story vision. Candidates should also be able to incorporate story archetypes from Global South media ethos, whenever possible, and guide students editorially in the production of multimedia assignments. Working knowledge of the basics of Associated Press or other styles is a plus. Ideally, the candidate will also possess the ability to develop and teach a Global Journalism course that speaks to an expansive media ecology and a range of ethical and professional standards. There are also opportunities to work with a growing list of interdisciplinary minors, and to collaborate with NU-Q’s Institute for Advanced Study of the Global South, Artificial Intelligence and Media Lab, and Media Majlis.

Candidates for this position would be expected to maintain a scholarly trajectory relative to their field, substantiated through quality journalistic production, creative work, and/or academic publications. Preference will be given to candidates with professional media experience in the Middle East and/or North Africa. A Ph.D. is preferred, but not required.

NU-Q is a globally embedded institution: it is one of three campuses of Northwestern University (Chicago, Doha, Evanston) and one of several institutions in the Qatar Foundation’s Education City in Doha, Qatar. Our mission is to mentor and educate students to become creative, ethical, and impactful communicators across cultural and national boundaries. We are committed to a vibrant student life, academic excellence, and high-level undergraduate student research and media making, particularly on the Global South. Located at the confluence of continents, NU-Q is a diverse global community with approximately 500 students from 60 countries.

NU-Q provides competitive compensation and benefits. The medium of instruction is English, but proficiency in Arabic or another regional language is an advantage at NU-Q. Candidates with experience in US higher education as well as in the Arab region; women; and persons from traditionally underrepresented groups in academia are particularly encouraged to apply.

Applications received by October 1, 2024, will receive the highest priority. The search will continue until the position is filled or the search closed.
