The Department of English Language and Literature at Smith College invites applications for two two-year, benefits eligible non-tenure-track positions at the rank of lecturer, to begin July 1, 2020. Each position may have the possibility of renewal. One position is in American ethnic literatures from 1900-present. The other is in the literature of the early modern period. Candidates should specify the job for which they are applying. The successful applicants will teach five courses per year starting in Fall 2020, at all levels of the department’s curriculum. Candidates from groups underprepresented in the field of English Studies are encouraged to apply.

In each case we are open to candidates working in any area, or on any topic, medium, or genre within their field. We expect that strong candidates will demonstrate both a wide and deep knowledge of the literary texts of their period and beyond, along with a command of key methodological and theoretical imperatives current in the discipline. A Ph.D. in hand is preferred, though exceptionally promising candidates near completing the degree will be considered. Strong candidates will also exhibit experience and enthusiasm in working with students from a range of backgrounds.
