Job Description Summary

The Department of English at Auburn University anticipates making multiple Lecturer appointments for the 2024-2025 academic year, with a starting date of August 16, 2024. These are nine-month, full- time, non-tenurable teaching appointments that may be renewed annually by mutual agreement based on the availability of funds, the need for services, and satisfactory performance. Salary $40,000. The Department anticipates continuing employment in these positions, with the possibility of promotion to Senior Lecturer. Lecturers have primary responsibilities in teaching and secondary responsibilities in service and instructional leadership. The expected teaching load is 4/4; assignments typically include first-year composition, with departmental needs determining the courses taught each semester. Lecturers are normally eligible for summer teaching, if available. The English Department has particular interest in hiring faculty with skills and experience in working with non-native speakers and in writing studies. We are also particularly interested in candidates who advance our commitment to building a diverse and inclusive educational environment.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in English or a related field at the time appointment begins; record of successful teaching in first-year composition and one or more of the following areas: literature, ESOL, creative, technical, business, medical, or legal writing; strong potential as a colleague in the work of a unified department of English Studies.

The candidate selected for this position must be able to meet eligibility requirements to work in the United States at the time the appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the proposed term of employment. Excellent communication skills are required.

Desired Qualifications

PhD or other terminal degree in English or a related field at the time employment begins; an established and highly successful record of teaching composition and other applicable courses at the college or university level; experience working in the context of a writing program, including but not limited to collaborating with other teachers in a leadership or advisory capacity; demonstrated ability to engage with innovative learning technologies and/or online pedagogies; graduate coursework or scholarship in the field of writing studies and/or ESOL; relevant service at the level of department, college, or university.
