The Faculty of Arts & Sciences (FAS) at the American University of Beirut ─ Mediterraneo (AUB Mediterraneo) invites applications for a tenure-track Faculty position, preferably at the rank of Assistant Professor, and as Chair of the Institute for the Liberal Arts (ILA).

Reporting to the Dean of FAS, the Chair of ILA will have primary responsibility for the implementation and expansion of ILA activities in accordance with the university mission and policies. The Chair of ILA at AUB Mediterraneo will lead and expand the university’s liberal arts vision, fostering a culture of interdisciplinary collaboration, academic excellence, and global engagement. This role integrates student mentorship, faculty support, program development, general education, and research outreach.

As AUB Mediterraneo advances its unique approach to liberal arts education, the Chair will help shape how this tradition can best serve the Eastern Mediterranean while also connecting it meaningfully to Europe and the wider world. The Chair is also expected to maintain an active research agenda, contribute to the advancement of scholarship in their field, and support faculty and students in their academic development. Teaching responsibilities will typically include one course per semester, preferably with an emphasis on areas such as cultural history of the Eastern Mediterranean, literature, media and cultural studies, gender studies, or related disciplines.

Applicants should hold a PhD in the humanities or social sciences. We particularly encourage applications from candidates who have:

- A strong record of scholarly publications and an active research program.

- Interest in interdisciplinary curriculum development and adapting the liberal arts model to the European academic landscape.

- Demonstrated ability to lead academic initiatives, cultural programming, and outreach.

Brief Background about AUB Mediterraneo and AUB

The American University of Beirut – Mediterraneo, a twin campus of the American University of Beirut in Lebanon, is approved by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) as a branch campus of the American University of Beirut (AUB) in Beirut, Lebanon. AUB operates under a charter granted by the New York State Education Department (NYSED), which registers the university’s degree programs and has approved AUB Mediterraneo as a twin campus of AUB. All departments and programs at AUB Mediterraneo are accredited by the Cyprus Agency of Quality Assurance and Accreditation of Higher Education (CYQAA). The university welcomed its first cohort of students in the fall of 2023.
