The Department of Journalism and Media Studies invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professorship beginning Spring 2019. Candidates must have an active record of research/scholarship and/or professional or creative media work, and a strong commitment to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
This is a tenure-track appointment that is a teaching-intensive position (9 to 12 credit hours per semester). This position requires teaching excellence, a strong commitment to student engagement and productivity in publication, scholarly research and/or significant professional media activity. Faculty are expected to participate in academic advisement, student mentoring, academic assessment, student recruitment and retention, as well as in the origination of multimedia journalistic content produced by the Department of Journalism and Media Studies. This position requires a strong commitment to teaching excellence, student engagement, department collaboration and professional media activity if applicable.
The Lehman College campus is located in Bronx, New York and is a Senior College within the City University of New York (CUNY) system. Lehman is the only four-year public college in the Bronx and is recognized as a Hispanic Serving Institution. The college serves mainly undergraduate students preparing them for employment, the professions and further study. The teaching load is 21 hours (7 courses) per year and although the college is predominantly teaching focused, faculty at Lehman are active in research, scholarship and creative works. Service to the college, university and community is part of the mission as is a clear commitment to student engagement including advisement. Teaching is reduced for junior faculty over the first five years for scholarly development and all faculty are actively encouraged to seek external funding. Opportunities are available for faculty development and travel awards. Lehman College and CUNY internal funding is available through competitive grants for scholarship support.
This appointment requires a Ph.D. in a field directly related to media or a terminal degree in Journalism or related-media field with significant experience as a professional journalist and/or media professional in related fields that include, but are not limited to radio, television and textbased media. Candidates should also have a broad knowledge of media study and practice that will enable them to teach across the department majors as needed. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, a demonstrated track record of scholarship or media achievement, and the ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution. Candidates will be expected to have a prior track record of successful teaching at the university level.
