Distinguished Professor, Hall Chair in British History
The Department of History at the University of Kansas invites nominations and applications for the endowed position of Hall Distinguished Professor of British History. We seek a scholar of Britain and its Empire who, in research and teaching, positions Britain in global networks and contexts. Period and region of specialization is open. Candidates should have a distinguished international reputation for research and publication, offer evidence of significant professional activity beyond the university level, and demonstrate strong teaching and mentoring abilities.
This position will be awarded with tenure, and is endowed with substantial research support and a reduced teaching load. Expectations are for substantial and continuing research productivity, a commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching in a range of courses, and service to the department, college, and university commensurate with rank.

The University of Kansas is a Carnegie doctoral/research-extensive university with a $1.4 billion endowment and a faculty of 2,600. Current enrollment is 28,500 (19,000 undergraduate), with students drawn from 110 nations and all 50 states; 20.6% of KU students are members of minority groups. KU’s 1,000-acre main campus in Lawrence, a community of 95,000 in hilly northeast Kansas that lies about 35 miles west of Kansas City. Conduct research in area of expertise.
Develop and Maintain an active research program, which earns national and international recognition and expands the frontiers of knowledge and culture.
Publish and disseminate research through scholarly, peer-reviewed publications as well as other venues that reflect scholarly effort and achievement.
Act as a positive example of responsible scholarship for students and developing scholars.
Teach three courses/academic year in the History Department; courses may be cross-listed or cross-referenced with other departments.
Develop curricular programs in the history of Britain and the Empire and other aspects of historical study.
Prepare for class meetings and apply continual effort to be engaged with the historical discipline and convey its value to the students.
Responsible for making suitable alternative arrangements for class, in case of absence.
Develop assignments, administer tests, evaluate student work, provide feedback to students, and assign grades.
Hold regular office hours to be available for consultation by students.
Advise and mentor graduate and undergraduate students.
Adhere to Department, College, and University policies, in regard to instructional duties.
Participate in appropriate professional service activities at the regional, national and international levels.
Serve the Department, College and University on committees and projects.

Ph.D. in history or related field of study.
Current tenured professor status or equivalent credentials.
Demonstrated ability to teach beginning and advanced courses in specialty.
A record of excellence in teaching, advising and contributing to a diverse and inclusive learning environment, as evidenced by teaching philosophy statement and/or reference letters.
A significant record of research and commitment to excellence in research as evidenced by publications, externally funded research grants and/or awards, and an active research agenda.
Eligibility for appointment with tenure at the distinguished professor level, specifically: a distinguished international reputation for research and publication in the history of Britain and the Empire; significant engagement in other professional activities; and evidence of outstanding teaching abilities
Research and teaching areas congruent with department strengths.
Evidence of willingness to serve a leadership role in Department, College and University activities.
