The Dean’s office in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Kansas is seeking candidates for a Chairperson and Professor or Associate Professor position in African & African American Studies to begin July 1, 2020.
This position is for an internal Chair search which will provide leadership and oversight for all department activities, including outreach, as well as teaching, research, service responsibilities as a faculty member in the Department of African & African American Studies in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. All applicants must hold a tenured appointment with the rank of Associate Professor or Full Professor in the Department of African & African American Studies at the University of Kansas.
This position has a Limited Term Ending Date for a 5-year or possibly shorter term, with the possibility of reappointment upon satisfactory performance and mutual willingness to continue.
20% – Teaching/Advising. The normal teaching load for chairs is two courses per academic year. All faculty members are expected to be available to their students for advising outside of class and to participate in advising during pre-enrollment periods.
20% – Research. All faculty members are expected to engage in a program of research activity and to share their scholarship with colleagues and/or the public at large, through publication or other creative activities as detailed in your department’s faculty evaluation plan.
60% – Administration/Service. As chair, you will provide oversight and leadership for all unit activities, including outreach, in the unit. In addition, all faculty members are expected to fulfill their share of service duties needed to facilitate the efficient operation of the department. In addition, faculty may provide service at the College and University levels and in regional, national, and international activities of the discipline. Activities that foster effective relationships with alumni and other professionals and associations as well as community groups also constitute service.
Evaluation of the following requirements will be made through (1) descriptions of work experience and educational experiences in letter of application and (2) record of accomplishments and productivity addressed in CV.:
Tenured appointment with the rank of Associate or Full Professor in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences.
Experience serving as an academic leader and team builder, developing and enhancing research and educational relationships among faculty, alumni and its affiliated units.
Demonstrated teaching experience at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and commitment to teaching excellence as evidenced by application materials.
Demonstrated record of scholarly achievement, as evidenced by an established program of research with the promise of continued productivity.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and to manage interpersonal relations.
Rank of Full Professor.
Experience with KU and KUCR administrative procedures.
Experience in seeking outside funding and managing multiple projects.
