San Joaquin Delta Community College District is seeking a full-time tenure track faculty member in Ethnic Studies. The ideal candidate will share in the college's commitment to educating a racially and socioeconomically diverse student population with course offerings intended for those who desire a deeper understanding of Ethnic Studies, and its four discipline areas of study: African American Studies, Asian American Studies, Chicana and Chicano Studies, and Native American/American Indian Studies. The successful candidate will develop Ethnic Studies curricula and a new Ethnic Studies Program at San Joaquin Delta College.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Under the general supervision of the assigned TrAC Dean, the Professor will teach classes in Ethnic Studies. The successful candidate will provide evidence of knowledge and understanding of the racial, socioeconomic, and academic diversity within community college populations, and how these factors relate to the need for equity-minded and culturally-responsive practices in the community college setting. The ideal candidate will be one who values inclusive teaching practices, shared governance and interdisciplinary collaboration and is committed to student empowerment, community engagement, equity, anti-racism, and social justice.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Conduct and organize classes at the instructional level to meet the educational requirements stated in the course description and the course information outlines.
  • Advise and assist students in achieving stated course objectives.
  • Evaluate the progress of each student; connect students to appropriate campus-support services.
  • Participate in the evaluation of course offerings, including the revision of course descriptions and course outlines that reflect a culturally-responsive pedagogy.
  • Coordinate with other faculty in the selection of textbooks, audiovisual and other instructional materials that advance the college's mission of developing an equity-minded education.
  • Keep current with new developments and maintain fields of competency within the framework of support provided by the San Joaquin Delta Community College District.
  • Maintain necessary records of student enrollment, attendance, progress and grades; prepare and submit required reports to the administration.
  • Report to management any condition that might jeopardize the health or safety of students or the public.
  • Assist in the marketing and promotion of the program by participating in college-sponsored events and by visiting local businesses and schools.
  • Be familiar with and act in accordance with the Education Code and San Joaquin Delta Community College District policies and procedures.
  • Participate in departmental, TrAC, advisory, campus-wide and community committees as part of the shared-governance process and service area needs of the District.
  • Maintain office hours for students and participate in additional service hours/activities that benefit the student, college or community.
  • Plan and complete approved professional development flex activities each semester/year.
  • Participate in the departmental process of curriculum review, modification and the assessment of student learning outcomes.
  • Work collaboratively with Success Teams to monitor, advise and ensure student equity and success through completion and post-graduation outcomes.
  • Provide guidance and direction to readers and/or Instructional Support Assistants (ISA) as appropriate.
  • Perform other necessary duties as specified in the faculty contract and outlined in Board Policy.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Applicant must be able to meet the minimum educational qualifications set forth by the District and the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office.

These included:
  • Master's degree or above in the Ethnic Studies field

OR
  • A master's degree or above in American Studies/Ethnicity, Latino Studies, La Raza Studies, Central American Studies, Latin American Studies, Cross Cultural Studies, Race and Ethnic Relations, Asian-American Studies, or African-American Studies

OR
  • A master's degree or above in the Interdisciplinary area

OR
  • A master's degree or above in one of the disciplines included in the interdisciplinary area AND upper division or graduate course work in at least one other constituent discipline


DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Specialized expertise and training in one of the following areas: African American Studies, Asian American Studies, Chicana and Chicano Studies, Native American/ American Indian Studies.
  • Use of Ethnic Studies methods of inquiry, including but not limited to intersectionality, decolonizing methodology, anti-imperialist and abolitionist studies, and community-oriented activist action research.
  • Willingness to contribute to an Ethnic Studies Collaborative and an interest in building curriculum/programming in African American Studies, Asian American Studies, Chicana and Chicano Studies, and/or Native American/American Indian Studies.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt teaching strategies and techniques to different student's ability, learning styles, culture and ethnic groups.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching in a variety of settings including but not limited to online, dual enrollment and large lecture. A willingness to develop and utilize instructional materials including lectures and labs for multi-modalities.
  • Ability to use innovative and creative teaching techniques and equipment, including the use multimedia hardware, current applications, and online instructional strategies. A working knowledge of Canvas (or other Learning Management Systems) is particularly desirable.
