The Flight Training Department is currently accepting applications for the position of Aviation English (AE) Instructional Specialist at the Daytona Beach Campus.

The AE Instructional Specialist will teach aviation English to flight students in the ERAU Flight Training Department. Specifically. This position will be responsible to teach students who have English as a second language the conversational skills necessary to safely operate an aircraft in a flight training operational environment. The AE Specialist will also be involved in curriculum development, including day-to-day materials, lesson plans, and assessment instruments. To uphold the quality of aviation English programs at Embry-Riddle, it will be necessary for the candidate to maintain currency in the major trends in the fields of English for specific, occupational purposes, language assessment, and English language teaching, in addition to various aviation related fields in which English is a factor: flight, maintenance, and air traffic control. The position will also participate in language as a factor in aviation safety research projects and serve on University committees and special projects as assigned.

The AE Instructional Specialist will:

Provide classroom instruction on Aviation English.

Teach all assigned classes at scheduled times.
Organize instructional planning according to the objectives in the Aviation English for Flight Training Curriculum.
Develop/organize a syllabus that communicates required assignments, quizzes, exams, and final exam by due date.
Record daily attendance and communicate excessive absences to the flight department chairman.
Maintain a record of student grades and communications.
Communicate class policy outlining grade policy, attendance policy, etc.
Develop and lead an Aviation English program within the flight department.

Develop/modify/improve the learning objectives for the ERAU Aviation English course.
Develop/modify/improve the design strategy of the ERAU Aviation English Course.
Analyze the requirements for aviation English proficiency in the Flight Training industry on an ongoing basis.
Analyze the learners profile for the ERAU Aviation English class
Evaluate the effectiveness of the ERAU Aviation English course on a continuous basis and develop strategies for course improvement.
Asses the effectiveness of the ERAU Aviation English course by reviewing student satisfaction and student success in the ERAU flight program.
Develop a method to identify students who will need additional tutoring support after the successful completion of the ERAU Aviation English course.
Develop and lead a program that will provide specific tutoring to students who need additional aviation English training after they successfully complete the ERAU Aviation English course.
Tutor flight students who need additional assistance with Aviation English.
Participate/Attend seminars, lectures, conferences, etc. to ensure currency in the latest industry trends.
Assist students as needed.
Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

A Master’s degree in Applied Linguistics or Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages is required.

The ideal candidate will have:

1-3 years’ work related experience teaching in Intensive University English Programs
Abiding interest in learning and teaching aviation topics
general knowledge of aviation subjects relevant to the flight training environment
Experience developing course materials
A commitment to best practices in language teaching and testing
Ability to support and work within a team and adapt to new project directions
Ability to support all aspects of a new and growing aviation English program
High level of personal communication skills (particularly oral)
Detail and customer service oriented
Ability to work independently
Analytical skills, proficiency with Microsoft Access, SharePoint, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook/email
The applicant should possess a high level of personal communication skills (particularly oral); be extremely detailed and customer service oriented; have strong organizational skills; and an ability to work independently
