Associate, Full or Distinguished Professor
History of Art
The Kress Foundation Department of Art History at the University of Kansas seeks a colleague specializing in the history of American art for a tenured appointment at the rank of either Associate, Full, or Distinguished Professor as the Hall Family Foundation Professor in American Art and Culture beginning August 18, 2020.
The Hall Professor will exercise leadership in research, teach undergraduate and graduate courses, and supervise theses and dissertations. Candidates should have a strong publication record, be significantly engaged in other professional activities, and possess outstanding teaching abilities. The successful applicant will be hired with tenure at the rank of associate, full, or distinguished professor, depending on qualifications. An annual discretionary fund supporting research is provided with the position. Candidates who will contribute to the climate of diversity, including a diversity of scholarly approaches, are encouraged to apply.
The Kress Foundation Department of Art History currently employs ten full-time faculty members and has a flourishing, nationally recognized doctoral program. Private endowments support visiting lecturer programs and research travel for faculty and graduate students. The department is located in the Spencer Museum of Art, whose collections and exhibitions provide a rich resource for teaching. The 170,000-volume Murphy Library of Art and Architecture and an excellent digital visual image collection offer essential support for research and instruction.
Founded in 1865, the University of Kansas is a Carnegie-designated Research 1 Doctoral University, the flagship of the Kansas system and a member of the AAU. 40% (for Associate or Full Professor)/30% (for Distinguished Professor) – TEACHING
Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in American art history and participate in the teaching of introductory surveys. (Associate of Full Professor will have a 2-2 teaching load; Distinguished Professor will have a 2-1 teaching load).
Hold regular office hours.
Advise undergraduate and graduate students.
Guide research of graduate students and supervise dissertations in American art history.
40% (for Associate or Full Professor)/50% (for Distinguished Professor) – RESEARCH
Maintain an active and highly visible program of research in American art history.
Publish research findings in appropriate peer-reviewed scholarly outlets.
Present papers at professional conferences and deliver invited lectures.
20% – SERVICE
Provide service to the department, College, University and profession.
All faculty members are expected to act in a manner that promotes collegial relationships and shows respect toward students, staff, and colleagues. Faculty members are expected to meet satisfactory standards of performance in all three areas of responsibility and to carry out those responsibilities in accordance with the Faculty Code of Rights, Responsibilities, and Conduct
PhD with specialization in American art history or a related field.
Current tenured status or equivalent.
Evidence of a strong record of teaching and mentoring.
A substantial research record as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications and presentations.
A well-defined research agenda promising continued productivity.
