Position Summary

The Department of English at MSU invites applications for the Audrey and John Leslie Endowed Chair in Literary Studies with a focus on Creative Writing and North American Indian and Indigenous Literary Studies. This tenure-stream position is open to Assistant or Associate Professors. The position requires either an MFA in creative writing or a PhD in creative writing, literature, American Indian or Native studies or an equivalent field. Salary is competitive, commensurate with rank and experience, and the position includes research and programming funds.

The position will begin August 16, 2023. The express purpose of the Audrey and John Leslie Endowment in Literary Studies is to promote the transformative potential of literature, and the English Department is particularly interested in candidates whose creative practice, scholarship, and/or editing highlights the political and cultural work that literature accomplishes. The Department seeks to craft a long-term vision for the study of Native literatures, languages, and cultures that promotes collaboration across units at the university--including the Departments Creative Writing Program, the American Indian and Indigenous Studies program, MSUs Indigenous Law Program and the Native American Institute--and with tribal communities.

The successful candidate will have a substantial record of creative production in North American Indian and Indigenous literatures and a history of working in or with tribal communities. We seek applicants who work within and across traditional genres and forms of storytelling, especially fiction and creative non-fiction. We seek applicants who can teach Introduction to Creative Writing, and advanced courses in prose (including fiction and non-fiction). The successful candidate will be appointed on an academic year basis and will engage in an active program of creative production, research, service, and teaching. The course load for tenure system faculty is two courses per semester and may include courses in the College of Arts & Letters Interdisciplinary Arts & Humanities general education program, and, potentially, in the Colleges interdisciplinary programs, including American Indian and Indigenous Studies (AIISP), digital humanities, and womens and gender studies.
