The Department of History at the National University of Singapore (NUS) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor in the History of Science, Technology, and/or Medicine to commence in August 2024. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in History, or from an interdisciplinary program such as Science, Technology, and Society (STS) or the History and Philosophy of Science (HPS) but with a history concentration. The position is open to scholars with any geographic and chronological specialization, but with a preference for candidates whose research interests are in modern Asia. Ability to also teach environmental history is an asset. Candidates for the position must demonstrate the potential for excellence in research and teaching and have a clear potential for distinguished scholarship, grant-funded research, and student mentorship at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. NUS is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching, and service as appropriate to the position.

Candidates with outstanding research achievements may be eligible for appointment as a Presidential Young Professor (PYP) at the rank of Assistant Professor. This offers a start-up grant package of up to SGD 250,000, and an additional SGD 250,000 for discretionary spending.

According to the QS Rankings 2023, the NUS Department of History is ranked 13th among university history departments worldwide, and 1st in Asia. It is one of 15 departments within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Southeast and East Asia are areas of departmental strength, but our 30+ faculty members have research interests which range across Asian, European, and American history, as well as the histories of science & technology, medicine, art, the environment, religion, law, business, gender, military affairs, and the maritime world. In addition, the world-renown Asia Research Institute at NUS has an STS Cluster which engages historians as part of its interdisciplinary community, as do our many area studies departments.  We offer a competitive remuneration package, including housing and relocation benefits for eligible overseas candidates.

Interested applicants are invited to apply directly at our NUS Career Portal. Application dossiers should include a c.v. with a complete list of publications and courses taught; a cover letter explaining why the position at NUS is of interest, and discussing your research program and teaching experience, as well as any other relevant information; a sample of your best writing; and a list of three references, with contact information, one of whom should ideally be your Ph.D. supervisor. Review of applications will begin on Mar 16, 2024, and continue until an appointment is made. We regret that only shortlisted candidates will be notified.
