About the opportunity
The Department of Classics and Ancient History at the University of Sydney is internationally recognised for its excellence in research and teaching in all aspect of Greco-Roman antiquity (https://sydney.edu.au/arts/schools/school-of-philosophical-and-historical-i… ). It collaborates closely with members of the sister Departments of Archaeology and Philosophy whose expertise lies in the ancient world.
Applications are invited for an ongoing position at the level of Lecturer (equivalent to the North American Assistant Professor) in the Department of Classics and Ancient History. The Department is seeking an applicant with an outstanding research profile in Ancient History, with a preference for Ancient Greek History.
As a Lecturer in Ancient History, you will contribute to and enhance the existing research strengths of the Department; pursue an active program of research that can attract external competitive funding; participate fully in the Department’s research culture; and undertake appropriate administrative roles and curriculum development as required.
You will teach or co-teach undergraduate units of study at all levels of the Ancient History Major, and it will be an advantage to be able to contribute from time to time to the other majors offered within the department, Latin and Greek. You will also supervise Honours and postgraduate students on a range of topics of departmental interest and need.
We are seeking to appoint a Lecturer (equivalent to a North American Assistant Professor). The appointee will be expected to:
- design and deliver high-quality undergraduate teaching courses / units / modules in Ancient History
- contribute to existing undergraduate teaching courses in Ancient History and Classics as needed
- supervise Honours, Doctoral and other postgraduate research students
- publish research in well-regarded peer-reviewed international publications
- seek research funding from internal and external sources
- Contribute energetically to the department’s research and teaching cultures
- contribute to academic administration.

- a PhD in Ancient History, or a related discipline
- demonstrated research expertise in the social, cultural and political history of the Classical world, with a preference for that of Greece from the Archaic to the Hellenistic period, evidenced through high-quality publication
- experience as a skilled teacher of Ancient History at the tertiary level
- capacity to teach in a range of areas including the social, cultural, and political history of Greece
- capacity for high-quality teaching at undergraduate or postgraduate level, in both large and small units
- capacity to supervise Honours and postgraduate students across a wide range of subjects pertaining to Classical antiquity
- capacity to teach Latin or Greek would be desirable
- capacity to teach in interdisciplinary and project-based contexts
- capacity to contribute to curricular development
- an active research program with significant potential for future publication, collaborative work, the securing of external funding and impact
- evidence of successful teamwork and a collegial approach.
