JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

In addition, assistant teaching professors will be required to travel with groups of students to advise their Interactive Qualifying Projects at WPI's project centers around the world. Faculty also meet with student teams, regularly, during the term prior to travel to assist in the preparation of research proposals to guide the students' work.

WPI is passionate about creating an inclusive workplace that promotes and values diversity. We are looking for candidates who can support our commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.

JOB DESCRIPTION

RESPONSIBILITIES

Faculty are required to prepare and travel with students to supervise their Interactive Qualifying Projects (IQP) at one or more of WPI's project center destinations around the world. The IQP is one of the most distinctive elements of the WPI Plan and WPI's signature project-based curriculum. Unlike an academic course, this nine-credit-hour requirement involves students working in teams, with students not in their major, to tackle an issue that relates science, engineering, and technology to society.

WPI operates in 7-week academic terms. Faculty will be expected to both teach "Social Science Research Methods for the IQP," and advise students, on-site, during a travel term that typically lasts 7-8 weeks. As stated above, the course must include content related to social science research methods, effective communications and teamwork, and ethical research. It often includes material related to the students' project country/location. Students work in teams (usually of four students) to complete a research proposal that will guide their project work off-campus.

Faculty traveling with students are called "Advisers." They guide students through their project experience while also providing student support onsite. Advisors are asked to lead onsite orientations, respond to emergencies, and assist project teams to resolve issues of group dynamics, sponsor relationships, or other issues that arise. These highly demanding positions require a significant amount of flexibility, self-initiative, and the ability to excel under challenging conditions while efficiently accomplishing tasks in a fast-paced environment. Advisers are also expected to participate in all predeparture training and orientation to prepare them to address health and safety issues while traveling with students.

REQUIREMENTS

An ideal applicant will hold a PhD in a related discipline with relevant practical, in addition to successful undergraduate teaching experience. Experience living or working abroad is also highly desired.

Fluency in foreign languages is desirable, but not required.

Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, cover letter, and names and contact information for three references. The cover letter should feature the candidate's relevant teaching experience, area(s) of scholarly interest, and commitments to enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education.

FLSA STATUS
