Nazarbayev University Graduate School of Education (NUGSE) invites applicants to join our international faculty and to share our vision of becoming a world-class center for teaching and research on education. Due to expansion, Nazarbayev University Graduate School of Education (NUGSE) is recruiting a faculty members in Multilingual Education.

Nazarbayev University (NU) – located in Astana, Kazakhstan – is a new Western-style, English-medium institution, created with the support of other leading university partners around the world. (For more information please visit our official website: nu.edu.kz)

NUGSE began providing its first Master’s and Ph.D. programs in September 2013, supported by its strategic partners, the University Of Cambridge Faculty of Education and the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School Of Education. Still expanding, NUGSE currently offers a M.Sc. in Educational Leadership, an M.A. in Multilingual Education, and a Ph.D. in Education, a M.Sc. in Educational Leadership offers specializations in School Education, Inclusive Education and Higher Education.

NUGSE plays a key role in driving education reform in Kazakhstan, and faculty members who are keen to make a difference through work with schools, other universities and the Ministry of Education and Science are especially welcome. The School also houses a Research Institute and a Projects and Professional Development Center, and plays a major role nationally in conducting educational research and advising on policy

Full Professor/Associate Professor/Assistant Professor in Multilingual Education

The successful applicant will hold a doctoral degree in Applied Linguistics or related discipline with research in one or more of the following areas in Multilingual Education: Linguistics, Language Education, Bi/Multilingualism, Second Language Acquisition, Language Processing, Language Policy, or Language-in-Education. Expertise in quantitative/qualitative/mixed methods is highly desirable. Experience of teaching in the Applied Linguistics (or a related discipline discipline) is essential for associate and full professor roles.

Selection Criteria – Assistant Professor

ESSENTIAL

1. A PhD or equivalent in Applied Linguistics or related discipline.
2. Research experience in multilingualism, with a specialization in Applied Linguistics, Language Education, Language Acquisition in Bi/Multilingual settings, Second Language Acquisition, Language Processing, Language Policy, Language-in-Education.
3. Evidence of capacity for research publications in journals of international repute (or the equivalent in books, book chapters, refereed working papers, and consulting). Evidence may include reference to technical reports or commissioned works.
4. Evidence of emerging expertise in quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods research.
5. Excellent interpersonal skills and a proven ability to establish good working relationships with colleagues, personal suitability, and motivation for the position.
6. Capacity to actively contribute to the national education reform mission of the School and University through collaboration and outreach activities with the wider education community in Kazakhstan.
7. Excellent English language skills, both spoken and written.

DESIRABLE

1. Work and research experience in culturally and linguistically diverse contexts.
2. Potential to contribute to the long-term development of the academic and research environment at NUGSE.
3. Pedagogical qualifications and disposition to inspire students.
4. Interest and ability in leadership and project management.
5. Ability to create and contribute to a positive environment for collaboration.
6. Experience with collaboration across established disciplines, and ability to work within international networks.
7. Skills within popular dissemination, public outreach, and innovation.
Selection Criteria – Associate Professor

ESSENTIAL

1. A PhD or equivalent in Applied Linguistics or related discipline.
2. Research experience in multilingualism, with a specialization in Applied Linguistics, Language Education, Language Acquisition in Bi/Multilingual settings, Second Language Acquisition, Language Processing, Language Policy, Language-in-Education.
3. Evidence of at least five research publications (at least three in the last three years) in journals of international repute (or the equivalent in books, book chapters, refereed working papers, and consulting).
4. Documented experience in quantitative/qualitative/mixed method research.
5. Excellent record of teaching in postgraduate programs, including programme and/or curriculum design and research supervision. At least three years of post-terminal degree teaching experience, with at least three years of teaching at the graduate level at institutions of higher education.
6. Proven high-level face-to-face and online teaching skills, and curriculum design employing varying modes and delivery designs.
7. Developing research reputation at the professorial level underpinned by an emerging strong track record of publications, knowledge translation expertise, and success in obtaining, as primary investigator or co-investigator, research grants.
8. Previous experience in the supervision, management, and timely completion of doctoral students, including advising and improving on research excellence, career development and candidature management.
9. Excellent interpersonal skills and a proven ability to establish good working relationships with colleagues, personal suitability, and motivation for the position.
10. Capacity to actively contribute to the national education reform mission of the School and University through collaboration and outreach activities with the wider education community in Kazakhstan.
11. Excellent English language skills, both spoken and written.

Selection Criteria – Professor

ESSENTIAL

1. A PhD or equivalent in Applied Linguistics or related discipline.
2. Research experience in multilingualism, with a specialization in Applied Linguistics, Language Education, Language Acquisition in Bi/Multilingual settings, Second Language Acquisition, Language Processing, Language Policy, Language-in-Education.
3. Evidence of at least 10 research publications (at least three in the last three years) in journals of international repute (or the equivalent in books, book chapters, refereed working papers, and consulting) which should show high quality of research and scholarship, originality, and innovative thinking as judged by experts in the appointee’s field of specialization.
4. Documented experience in quantitative /qualitative/mixed method research.
5. Excellent record of teaching in postgraduate programs, including programme and/or curriculum design and research supervision. At least eight years of post-terminal degree teaching experience, with at least three years of teaching at the graduate level at institutions of higher education.
6. Proven high-level face-to-face and online teaching skills, and curriculum design employing varying modes and delivery designs.
7. Internationally established research reputation at the professorial level underpinned by a track record of publications, knowledge translation expertise, and success in obtaining, as primary investigator, research grants of national and international importance.
8. Previous experience in the supervision, management, and timely completion of doctoral students, including advising and improving on research excellence, career development and candidature management.
9. Excellent interpersonal skills and a proven ability to establish good working relationships with colleagues, personal suitability, and motivation for the position.
10. Capacity to actively contribute to the national education reform mission of the School and University through collaboration and outreach activities with the wider education community in Kazakhstan.

Conditions of Employment:

Initial appointment is on 3-year renewable contracts and will be subject to annual performance reviews. An attractive remuneration package will include:
