Position Title: Assistant Professor of Art History – Asian or African Art/Visual Culture

Job Description:

The Department of Art and Art History at Oakland University announces a tenure-track position for Assistant Professor of Art History to begin August 2020. The area of specialization is art, architecture, and visual culture of Asia or Africa. A Ph.D. in art history or a qualified proximate field is required. Oakland University is a research-intensive public institution with internal funding opportunities. Scholars who do fieldwork, interdisciplinary research, or those with curatorial interests are encouraged to apply.

Faculty members at all levels in this department teach introductory, 2000- and 3000-level courses, as well as providing one-on-one mentoring and advising. We seek educators who can generate broad interest among undergraduate general education students in lower-level survey courses and can inspire specific interest in upper-level courses in their area of specialization. Upper-level courses should appeal to students of art history as well as the contemporary practices of graphic design and studio art. Breadth of interests, both within and outside the candidate’s research area, is a valuable asset, as is a willingness to develop new courses. This department is seeking to revise its offerings to reflect the needs of a multicultural, globally informed society.

Candidates must demonstrate experience with, or a commitment to diversity and inclusion. To this end, candidates must provide a statement of their commitment to diversity. Specifically, they must describe their efforts to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in their previous positions and how they plan to continue these endeavors in their role at Oakland. Teaching and mentoring students with a diverse range of experiences are essential. Additionally, Oakland promotes community engagement, and candidates who can engage with the Detroit metropolitan area will find working in this region highly rewarding.

Full consideration will be given to applications received by February 1, 2020. We will conduct preliminary interviews via videoconferencing in February.

Minimimum Qualifications:

PhD (ABD considered if completion anticipated by August 15, 2020)
