The Department of English Language and Literature at Smith College invites applications for a three-year, non-tenure-track, lecturer position. The successful applicant will teach five courses per year starting Fall 2019. We seek a junior scholar in one of two broad fields: American literature and literature of the early modern period.

Strong candidates for this position will demonstrate both wide and deep knowledge of literary texts of their period of specialization and beyond and command of key methodological and theoretical imperatives current in the discipline. A Ph.D. in hand is preferred, though exceptionally promising candidates near completing the degree will be considered. The lecturer will teach courses at all levels in the department’s curriculum. Strong candidates will also exhibit experience and enthusiasm in working with students from a range of backgrounds.

Located in Northampton, MA, Smith College is the largest women’s college in the country and is dedicated to excellence in teaching and research across the liberal arts. A faculty of outstanding scholars interact with students in small classes, as advisors, and through student-faculty research projects. The Five College Consortium, comprised of Smith, Amherst, Mount Holyoke, and Hampshire Colleges and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, provides a rich intellectual and cultural life and broad collegial opportunities.
