Purpose: The Division of Language and Literature at Oklahoma Baptist University seeks an Assistant/Associate Professor of English with a concentration in British literature to teach upper-level electives in British literature, sophomore general education courses in literature of the Western World, and first-year composition. The successful candidate will have a strong dedication to Christian higher education, a clear vision for the integration of faith and learning, and a firm commitment to serving students through advising, mentoring, and general participation in the life of the Division.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Teach a range of undergraduate courses in British literature (e.g., Renaissance through Eighteenth-Century, Romantic and Victorian, Shakespeare, Transatlantic Modernism).
  • Teach other formative courses in the English core curriculum, including composition, introduction to literature, and OBU’s unique, co-taught Western Civilization courses that integrate history and literature.
  • Participate in divisional events designed to foster community among students/faculty and strengthen enrollment/retention.
  • Contribute to curriculum development and assessment, in Language and Literature.
  • Serve on divisional and university committees as assigned by the Division Chair or Dean and advise students.
  • Integrate a Christian worldview in all aspects of teaching, scholarship, and service.
  • Supervise independent studies or undergraduate research in literature and writing.
  • Support student and faculty writing development through workshops, mentoring, and campus events.
  • Assist in organizing or moderating sessions for Visiting Writers Seminars, Lamppost Literary Conference, and Summer Writers Camp.
  • Represent the Division at admissions and recruitment events, including outreach to area schools and community partners.
  • Engage in professional and faith-based organizations relevant to literature, writing, and education.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • D. in English, ABD considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching and mentoring undergraduate students.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Evidence of scholarly work Commitment to OBU’s mission as a Christian liberal arts university.

Education:

  • Required: Ph.D. in English with a specialization in British Literature.
  • ABD and / or MFA considered on a case-by-case basis.

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit, stand, and lecture for extended periods.
  • Ability to use a computer for extended periods.
  • Sufficient mobility to move between offices, classrooms, and campus facilities.
  • Visual and auditory ability to communicate effectively with students and colleagues in person and electronically.
  • Ability to travel occasionally for professional development or university-related activities.

Special Requirements:

  • Must be a member of a local evangelical* Christian church.

*Evangelical is a broad term referring to segment within Christianity which maintains the authority of the Bible and the belief in salvation by faith in Jesus alone.
