The Department of Journalism and Media Studies, housed in the School of Arts and Humanities at Lehman College/CUNY, invites applications for a full-time lecturer position beginning Spring 2019. Candidates must have a strong commitment to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. This appointment requires a graduate degree in Journalism or other area of media study with prior experience as a media professional in fields that include but are not limited to radio, television, film and text-based media. Candidates should have a broad knowledge of media study and practice that includes writing, production and on-air presentation, enabling them to teach across the majors as needed. This appointment requires ability to teach academically sound curriculum that is reflective of the current state of media, a demonstrated track record of successful teaching and media achievement, and the ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution. Candidates will be expected to have a prior track record of successful teaching at the university level.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate level courses across the three majors as needed. These include Film and Television Studies, Journalism and Media Communications Studies. Responsibilities include advising students and providing service to the department, college, university, and community (i.e. committee, administrative, supervisory, and other assignments normally associated with a full-time lecturer appointment). Evening teaching may be required. Faculty are expected to engage in student mentoring, academic assessment, student recruitment and retention and to participate in the origination of multimedia content produced by the Department of Journalism and Media Studies.
This is a non-research appointment that is a teaching-intensive position (9 to 12 credit hours per semester). This position requires a strong commitment to teaching excellence, student engagement, department collaboration and professional media activity if applicable.
The Lehman College campus is located in Bronx, New York and is a Senior College within the City University of New York (CUNY) system. Lehman is the only four-year public college in the Bronx and is recognized as a Hispanic Serving Institution. The college serves mainly undergraduate students preparing them for employment, the professions and further study. The teaching load is 27 hours (9 courses). Service to the college, university and community is part of the mission as is a clear commitment to student engagement including advisement.
