The Department of History at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a pool of qualified temporary instructors to teach courses should an opening arise. Screening of applicants is ongoing and will continue as needed. The number of positions varies from semester to semester, depending on the needs of the department. Positions may range from 16% to 100% time, which would translate to 1 to 6 courses over a two semester academic year.

The Department of History at the University of California, Berkeley, is generating an applicant pool of qualified instructors to teach courses in all areas of History (Africa, Ancient Greece & Rome, Byzantine, Early Modern Europe, East Asia, North America, Jewish, Late Modern Europe, Latin America, Medieval Europe, Middle East, Science, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and other various needs), pending openings.

Due to COVID-19. UC Berkeley will begin the spring semester with fully remote instruction. UC Berkeley is prepared to implement hybrid and/or flexible modes of instruction as soon as public health conditions allow. Remote instruction may be synchronous, asynchronous, or a combination of both. Instructors must have internet access and be prepared to adjust pedagogical approaches with a remote setting and use new teaching tools.

Basic qualifications (at time of application): The minimum qualifications required to be an applicant are the completion of all PhD (or equivalent international degree) requirements except the dissertation.

Additional qualifications (by start date): A PhD (or equivalent international degree) is required by the start date. Demonstrated teaching experience is required by the start date.

Preferred qualifications: A PhD (or equivalent international degree) in History, or related field. Demonstrated teaching excellence in the appropriate fields with undergraduates and, where appropriate, graduate students.

Salary range: $56,381 - $62,232, based on a two semester, 100% time appointment. Starting salary will be commensurate with past college-level teaching experience.

In addition to teaching responsibilities, general duties may include holding regular office hours, calculating grades, advising students, preparing course materials, managing GSIs, and attending appropriate meetings/orientations, etc.

Applications will be reviewed for appointments during the 2021-2022 academic year (Summer Sessions 2021, Fall 2021, and Spring 2022 semesters). Reviews will continue as needed throughout the year. It is important to mark any and all specializations that match your area of expertise, and also indicate these in your cover letter. If you would be available for or interested specifically in summer teaching, please indicate as a specialization as well.
