JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY
Worcester Polytechnic Institute's Humanities and Arts Department and the Professional Writing program invite applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor of Writing and Rhetoric for the 2024-2025 academic year, beginning in August 2024. This is a full-time faculty position for one academic year. Primary responsibilities involve teaching existing courses targeted at first- and second-year students (e.g., our offerings named Elements of Writing, Writing About Science and Technology, and Introduction to Rhetoric).

Successful candidates will have demonstrated experience and a record of excellence in teaching undergraduate writing and rhetoric courses at the 1000- and 2000-level and should be motivated to teach writing to STEM students. Candidate's area of expertise within writing and rhetoric is open, but we especially encourage applicants with a focus on science, medical, business, and/or technical writing and rhetoric.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Job responsibilities will include:

  • Teaching 8 courses over the appointed academic year (this amounts to 2 courses per term since our 9-month academic year is split into four 7-week-long terms)

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or terminal degree in Professional/Technical Writing, Composition and Rhetoric, Writing Studies is preferred; terminal degree in other relevant fields considered.

  • Candidates should have earned their PhD or terminal degree by August 15, 2024.

  • A track record of successful classroom teaching at the university level.

  • The ability to work creatively and collaboratively across disciplines with faculty, staff, and students of various experience levels.

  • A statement of teaching philosophy.

We will ask for letters of reference, a writing sample, and teaching portfolio for short-listed candidates only. Application review will begin immediately, and will continue until filled. Applicants who apply by April 24, 2024 will receive full consideration. We anticipate concluding this search by May 15, 2024. The university is not able to offer visa support for this position.
