Lecturer Pool - Language, Literature, and/or Culture Courses - Department of Scandinavian
The Department of Scandinavian at UC Berkeley welcomes applications for a pool of qualified temporary instructors to teach courses, should a need arise, in any of the following possible areas:
- Danish Language
- Modern Icelandic Language
- Finnish Language
- Finnish Culture and History
- Norwegian Language
- Swedish Language
- Reading and Composition (first- and second-year university writing courses using Scandinavian materials in translation)
- Various upper-division special topics courses on Nordic literature, cultural history, folklore, and film
The number of positions hired from this pool will vary from semester to semester, subject to the needs and budget of the department, and is often zero. This application pool does not guarantee that an open position exists. When an instructor is hired, the position will most likely be part time, as low as 25% of full time employment, depending on instructional workload.
When a need arises for a Fall semester, we typically review applications in March, April or May; for a Spring semester or Summer term, our review of applications is typically in October or November.
Positions typically start at the beginning of the semester (in mid-January for Spring Semester; in mid-August for Fall Semester), and appointments may be renewable based on the department's need, funding, and on lecturer performance.
General Duties: In addition to teaching responsibilities, general duties include holding office hours, assigning grades, advising students, preparing course materials (e.g., syllabus), and interacting with students outside of class time via email and campus web-based course resources.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION (required at time of application):
- Completed Master's degree (or equivalent international degree)
- For language courses, fluency in the relevant language of instruction (Danish, Finnish, Icelandic, Norwegian, or Swedish) and in English.
- Advanced degree in Scandinavian language, literature, or history (or closely related fields).
- Experience and demonstrated excellence in teaching at the college level in the U.S.
- If hired to teach R&C, demonstrated experience teaching reading and writing in English, and familiarity with UC Berkeley's R&C requirements.
- If hired to teach a language course, professional training in language teaching.
- Potential for successful attraction, advising, and mentoring students.
- Potential for program development and designing new courses.
- Willingness and ability to teach via distance learning technology.
- Ph.D. (or international equivalent degree) may be preferred, depending on courses being taught.
- For those who are not US citizens or permanent residents, a legal permit that allows work in the United States (such as a US visa that allows employment) is required by the start date of the position. The department is unable to provide a visa/work permit.
Salary: Commensurate with college teaching experience, in accordance with the current Unit-18 lecturer salary scale and its provisions. (The starting 100% full-time annual gross salary rate is currently $56,381.)
