Company Description:

Founded in 1919, AUC moved to a new 270-acre state-of-the-art campus in New Cairo in 2008. The University also operates in its historic downtown facilities, offering cultural events, graduate classes, and continuing education. Student housing is available in New Cairo. Among the premier universities in the region, AUC is Middle States accredited; its Engineering programs are accredited by ABET, its Chemistry program is accredited by the Canadian Society for Chemistry, and the School of Business is accredited by AACSB, AMBA and EQUIS. The AUC Libraries contain the largest English-language research collection in the region and are an active and integral part of the University's pursuit of excellence in all academic and scholarly programs. AUC is an English-medium institution; eighty-five percent of the students are Egyptian and the rest include students from nearly ninety countries, principally from the Middle East, Africa and North America. Faculty salary and rank are based on qualifications and professional experience. According to AUC policies and procedures, faculty are entitled to generous benefits.

Job Description:

The Department of English and Comparative Literature (ECLT) at the American University in Cairo anticipates filling one or more full time five-year appointments, beginning in Fall 2019 (rank open). We are seeking faculty who can complement present specialties and can undertake responsibilities for academic administrative work such as serving as department chair, as Director of our graduate program, or as Editor of AUC's interdisciplinary, tri-lingual academic annual, Alif: Journal of Comparative Poetics.

Areas of specialization include: Shakespeare, Renaissance Studies, and Early Modern English Literature; World Literature including Classics of the Ancient World; and Comparative Literature with an interdisciplinary dimension, including visual studies, gender studies or popular culture.

The School of Humanities and Social Sciences currently has a Mellon Grant to promote the Humanities in Egypt and the Global South, and a background and research agenda relevant to that ongoing effort is desirable.

In order to meet the needs of this historically-oriented and regionally-specific curriculum, we seek colleagues who are not only able to teach courses traditionally represented in all literature programs, but who also understand the unique composition and mission of an English and Comparative Literature Department situated in Cairo, at the crossroads of East and West as well as the Global North and South. We are interested in faculty who are not only specialists in literary studies but who would be able to branch into neighboring disciplines and fields related to the department's and university mission.

Requirements:

Applicants must have a PhD in English, Comparative Literature, or a related discipline by the time of appointment, preferably with a record of an active research agenda and teaching experience.

The successful candidate is expected to teach humanities courses in the AUC core curriculum, actively engage in research; supervise MA theses and serve on committees; and provide department and university service.

Additional Information:

Review of applications will begin immediately. Positions are open until filled.

Application Instructions:

All applicants must submit the following documents via the online system:

a) an updated C.V; (b) a letter of interest; (c) a completed AUC Personnel Information Form (PIF); (d) list of professional publications; (e) a statement of teaching philosophy; and (f) copies of recent student evaluations.
