Description: The Department of Africana Studies and the Department of American Studies announce a search for a scholar of Civil Rights studies, beginning Fall 2024. The position will begin at the assistant professor level with the tenure home in Africana Studies and a joint appointment in the Department of American Studies. We are especially interested in scholars who use interdisciplinary approaches to Black social movements of the twentieth century. Defining the era of Civil Rights broadly (including the New Negro Movement through the modern Civil Rights movement, approximately 1955-1975), we are interested in scholars engaging Black political thought, the intersection of race and gender within the context of Black social movements, sexual identity, and the socio-economic dimensions of political activism. Scholars specializing in interdisciplinary approaches such as sound theory, urban history, gender studies, Africana studies, and American studies are encouraged to apply.

Department of Africana Studies

Established in 2005, the Department of Africana Studies is an interdisciplinary department devoted to the study of the histories, politics, and cultures of peoples of African descent across the African diaspora. The department includes faculty with joint appointments in American Studies, English, Political Science, Theology, and Education, and offers a major, minor, and supplementary major.

Department of American Studies

The Department of American Studies is dedicated to "studying the American experience in all its diversity." Our fourteen faculty members have expertise in a wide variety of specializations, including all of the major fields within ethnic studies, and offer a wide variety of interdisciplinary courses with emphases on critical thinking and social justice. With approximately one hundred majors, it is the largest undergraduate program of its kind in the United States.


Qualifications:

Candidates must have completed the Ph.D. by the beginning of the appointment and must demonstrate a scholarly commitment to publishing in refereed impactful journals and presses.
