Founded in 1930 and located in Pasadena, California, ArtCenter College of Design is a global leader in art and design education and has had an international reputation for its rigorous, transdisciplinary curriculum, faculty of professionals, strong ties to industry, and commitment to socially responsible design. We are an independent, nonprofit, four-year college offering a Bachelor of Fine Arts or Bachelor of Science degree in eleven specialized programs and graduate degrees in ten art and design disciplines.
This position is one of six new faculty job openings across the disciplines of the College, which seeks to expand upon the strategies and perspectives available in the ArtCenter classroom, foster institutional expertise in the intersections between art and design practices and legacies of racism and colonialism, and advance more just and equitable futures both within and beyond the ArtCenter community. Preference will be given to candidates whose work engages global, anti-racist, and decolonizing frameworks in relation to the fields of art, design, and/or media.

The Industrial Design Undergraduate Program at ArtCenter are looking for one full-time faculty member with a background in design practice with a focus on areas of race, gender, LGBTQIA+, socio-economic disparity, and issues of colonialization and a euro-centric pedagogy. The studio work should reflect these issues across multiple design strategies. Form-giving experience (Product, Transportation and/or Spatial design), design research and design based on cultural issues are integral to the outcomes. The position will carry a workload including both teaching and departmental duties as follows: per week three, five-hour studio classes plus three faculty service hours. Faculty will be expected to maintain an active professional or research practice. Salary will be commensurate with professional experience and teaching.
This position requires full-time teaching responsibilities, administrative service, and instructional duties, which may be outside of the Industrial Design Department, and which may include occasional substitute teaching, service on collegewide committees such as Faculty Council, faculty and student mentoring and advising, core curricular planning, scholarship and portfolio student reviews, physical gallery and program website curation, outcome assessments with corresponding data collection, and attending departmental and College all-hands meetings. Full-time faculty are also responsible to help create visibility and recognition for the program and to maintain external relationships with designers and leaders experienced with issues of diversity, inclusion, and equity.
Core Duties and Responsibilities
Teaching in: Product Design, Transportation Design and Spatial Experience Programs
Provide classroom instruction, maintain and report student attendance, preparation of instructional material including class syllabi, grading students’ assignments and exams, posting students’ grades, consulting with students, replying to students’ inquiries, and facilitating course evaluations
Mentor and guide students beyond the classroom
Other Responsibilities and Service Opportunities
Assist in cultivating guest lectures, visiting designers, publications and student competitions
Cross-disciplinary course content
Assist with student gallery, grad show, and web content
Assist in creating visibility and recognition for the program among prospective students, the design community, creative industries, and potential donors and sponsors
Maintain external relationships with designers and leaders experienced with issues of diversity, inclusion, and equity
Master of Fine Arts from an accredited college or university or equivalent professional experience in their field
Experience with teaching practices
At least five years of professional work within the design field with a focus on management and leadership in large organizations and corporations.
Deep experience working with a variety of international brands in industrial design direction, branding, strategy, and in-house design communities.
National and international network and connections that may benefit the program and students
Demonstrated commitment to building innovative approaches to industrial design and developing a solid context for their own practice.
Ability to handle confidential information with tact and discretion and recognize the confidential nature of ArtCenter business, as well as requirements under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
Must be able to work with and understand our culturally diverse student and faculty body with their needs and goals
Demonstrated experience in and commitment to diversity, and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within Art Center’s diverse communities
A record of design awards and publication is an asset
Knowledge of public relations, social media, and media promotion
