The College of Arts and Sciences seeks candidates for a Head of the Department (HOD), opening in the Department of English for Spring 2010.

The candidate should currently be an Associate Professor or Professor, have a strong history of scholarly publication and have at least three years of administrative experience, preferably as a department head.

The candidate should have experience in dealing with people from diverse cultural and educational backgrounds.

The candidate should have the background and experience necessary to work with faculty in recruiting majors and strengthening its curricula.

North American teaching experience and a familiarity with the Middle East would be helpful.

The Department of English consists of eighteen full-time faculty, twelve in language, five in literature and one in creative writing. The Department of English offers a Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Literature (B.A.ELL), a Master of Arts Degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (M.A. TESOL) and concentrations and minors in language, literature and education. The Department also offers ESP courses for engineering and business students. More information may be found at:

The HOD receives a three-year administrative contract, renewable at three year increments. *However, UAE law prohibits people over 65 from receiving multiple year contracts. Contracts for people over 65 are renewed on a yearly basis. HODs are expected to teach one course per semester and are responsible for budget development and implementation, department planning, faculty and staff development, personnel evaluations and curriculum development and facilitation.
